...in restaurants?

About a month ago I went to a tea room with my mum and my aunt, and I asked for a coke and they just gave me a plastic bottle of coke.

I know it sounds trivial but when I go to a cafe, I rather be served drink in a glass, like you do at a bar. Coke usually tastes better in a glass, and just seems more "dine-like" to have served in a glass when dining. It's ok buying drink from a store that's served in a bottle.

I find myself having to ask for a glass. But if they just served people a drink in a glass to begin with, it would save on the amount of rubbish they throw out each day.

i've never been served a plastic bottle of a soda in a restaurant. it's always been served in a glass in all the restaurants i've gone to. i would find it strange if i went to a restaurant and asked for a coke and got it in a plastic bottle.

I can't remember if that's happened to me, but it doesn't seem good, no. Even if they are getting the Coke from that one individual bottle, they should have poured it into a glass before bringing the glass out and serving it to your table.

It sounds like they are trying to avoid having glasses to wash if they can help it.

This has never happened to me, but I actually like the idea (if they bring it out with the lid still on). Means I can drink at my own pace, without worrying about it going flat or ice melting into it - if they've served it with ice - and if I don't want it all then I can take it away to enjoy later.

Well yeah, the idea of being able to take the bottle away with you does have appeal, I can see that.

But it's still kind of....not classy....to be in a restaurant and get a drink served in its bottle, with no glass. It seems like service that has the least effort for presentation put into it. At a diner, fine, but in a nice tea room, unclassy.

A compromise would be if they brought out the glass and the bottle. You could pour some into the glass yet also take the rest of the bottle away for later.

Sounds like it is a place that focuses on serving tea....one would probably be lucky they have coke at all at a place like that.

One could argue its not classy to order a coke at a nice tea room.

When I've lived or traveled in the third world, getting it in a sealed bottle was always preferable. Otherwise, iffiness reduced the enjoyment. This does not seem to be the case.

I think your tea room was slightly tacky, or the staff got a bit overwhelmed at that point.

If they have it then obviously the nice tea room itself doesn't judge the Coke to be not classy . . .

And "tea rooms" aren't actually strictly about tea, despite the name suggesting so. It's just another name for an all-round restaurant or cafe that serves all beverages plus food choices. It's just an old fashioned name for a restaurant.

By the way, sweetleaf, do you have a problem with me?

If so give it to me straight.

Yeah, how hard is it to pour some Coke in a glass?

I also dislike it when you order tea from a tea room and they give you a tea bag.
It feels cheap and like they're not bothered to make the same effort they make for the coffee drinkers.

No I don't, didn't mean to come of like I did...I just figured it was a place specifically for having a coffee or tea, and places like that I've been don't usually have soda aside from a refrigerator with bottles of water, soda and maybe juice. Basically I've never seen them serve those alternate bottled options in a glass.

Okay. No worries.

These days most of those places at least in the UK serve Coke and other beverages. I know the name seems misleading though.

It hasn't happened to me, but I wouldn't like it if it did. Not only is it a lack of classiness, but it's also easier to drink from a glass, particularly to a meal.

I never been served a drink in a plastic bottle at a restaurant. I have grabbed plastic bottles of soda at pizza places like Papa Johns after I ordered my pizza & my drink. All their soda is in plastic bottles & it's not like I ordered it & they served it to me sense I told em the size bottle I wanted & I grabbed it myself. I'm sure if I'd ask for a cup that I'd get a paper one.
