Are they a bad thing for kids to play with or is it okay for kids to play with them?

I think that they're great toys for kids. They keep kids busy and active.

I prefer airsoft guns.

They're no worse than other toy weapons like swords or bows and arrows. Personally, I've never had much of an interest in such things.

And if you took the toy guns away from boys, they'd just find something that looks sort of like a gun, like a cucumber or a carrot, and continue pretending to kill each other. Because humans are senseless killers by nature and the instinct is stronger in the males. That's not sexism, that's genetic.

Whats to think about?

They are harmless toys (both physically, and psychologically harmless).

I built toy guns.
My dad has since conceded that not allowing them wasn't worthwhile.

There are people who would say that even if kids pretend to kill each other without actual toy guns by giving them a toy gun you are encouraging them to do so or telling them it's a good thing to do.

I bet the people who say that also support laws banning all TV shows, movies, video-games, & music from having anything related to violence in them. It's impossible for parents to keep their kids away from all that media unless they live in an Amish town or the parents keep their kids locked in a basement nonstop till he/she becomes an adult.

their hearts are in the right place, but their heads aren't screwed on tight. Teaching kids to value peace is fine. But kids are gonna cock their fingers and pretend they are shooting guns, and play cowboys and Indians, and play football, and soccer, and play chess (the aforementioned games all simulate warfare), whether you allow it or not. And its all fine. Most of them wont grow up to be spree killers.
