Pop-culture memories , NYC , and pinball .
This is kind of meant to be a accompaning post to a " My story " post that might be a touch more down-:-( - This will , at least initially , touch on Seventies memories I am fonder of .
With the P-ball reference I especially hope I'll get Kraftiekortie here , and since he's likewise about my age and from the NYC metroplex too I hope ASPartOfMe will stop by ~ Y'all come
!
I never played pinball a gigantic lot as a teenager , but I did a bit and I remember playing an early " naughty - what is it doing to the kids today ! " arcade game called Death Race 2000 !
KK , you are from NYC proper , and IIRC (as for all here) NYC in the 70s was getting rid of a LaGuardia-era law that , effectively , outlawed standard pinball machines - Maybe then , as a response to that , more PB machines sprung up ?
Far away from my upper end of Westchester , in Yonkers really just across the border I recall a chain resturaunt that had a way big arcade as well , presumably to cater to the " Since you can't do it in NYC..." trade . I was from (Or so I make this distiction , anyway ~ ?) from the more far , upper , end of Westchester - They tended to discourage/not like " teenage "-y things like arcades (There was apparently a local DA then dead set against porno flicks , too so they were kept out ~ Hwever , when video stores came along , normal shops had separate porn sections like elsewhere I remember asking my father about this and he said the law was more clearly protecting a private/indoor store's ~ Um , whatever word I'm looking for here !) tho they did not stop them entirely .
ASP , we share having our youthful music fan days touch , in so9me ways , upon the " new wave " (you should pardon the expression) , um , " early punk to indie to college rock to alernative/whatever " era , even if our experiences/versions of it sort of differed like thoose blind guys and that elephant (Oh , Mr. Metaphor Man I ! !! !! !! !!)...Um , maybe I've put up enough of this for now Ya think
?

...I remember that there was a big , flashy/sorta rundown-looking , pinball arcade in Times Square then , called Playland IIRC .
I recall the Ramones and suchlike being photographed there .
I think I went there on my trips into NYC maybe once ~ or twice ~ briefly .

ASPP , I don't know whether you lived further into LI than I did into Westchester County , or if LI , larger I guess?? , has more a " culture of its own " than Westchester County does , as far as NYC suburban areas go...
As it happens , WLIR was a big deal to a lot of people , but I always lived jjuuussstt a bit beyond heir range , as with other stuff ~ Strictly for station names here , I remember WPIX''s " New Wave " time , and I recall WNYU - and I listened a lot to the New Jersey station , WFDU , connected to Farliegh Dickinson University , which shared frequencies with WNYU (Maybe they were beyond your area ?) .
'Fdu was , maybe , a teeny it marginal in reception where I was-Sort of the story of my life , looking back , everything always seemed just a little bit too far away - I never listened that much to that other , more " hardcore " indie/college station , from North Jersey (the one that Vin Scelsa came form) , they were , again , maybe a bit distant for me (I think they ended being a broadcast station and became online-only - The Scelsa's-former station , I mean . They had a station guide/official fanzine titled Lowest Common Denominator .) .

I'm younger, but we grew up with pinball machines at home. My parents' friend is in the business so we had a pinball machine at home. He'd find a buyer for it and then deliver a different one to us. We had 3 or 4 different ones. My parents still have the last one, "High Speed," downstairs in their basement beside the bar. It gets switched on a few times a year for the nephews and grandkids etc to play.
