why do we write a - in phone numbers?

why do we write a - in phone numbers like 867-5309? why don't we just write 8675309?

I guess it's customary. But I also see periods in phone numbers, too.

Most people can't remember long strings of numbers--the "-" is a trick to help people remember.

But, a significant number of Aspies have unusually good memories--I still remember 6.022045 x 10^23 after all these years.

One of the issues with Aspergers is that some of the stuff we regard as easy is actually quite hard for the average person. For instance, most people can't teach basic math that they learned 20 or 30 years ago without some sort of review or advanced preparation.
