I was in a fast food breakfast joint this morning for a bagel and a coffee. I requested my bagel with butter on the side, which is never a problem, until now. Every time I went there, they had actual butter packets. Today I was presented one lonely looking packet of Country Crock margarine. I HATE margarine, the taste, the mouthfeel, the aftertaste.

I asked if they had actual butter, they ended up giving me a little solo cup with butter, and some annoyed looks. Am I being too nitpicky? In my mind, I've asked for butter, not margarine. They substituted an entirely different substance without asking me if that was acceptable. Subway does something similar with mayonnaise, even if you specify regular mayo, they use light mayo.

I try to avoid speaking up, lest I look like the hundreds of irritating customers I deal with in my job. But in places like these, how do I make my request as specific and clear as possible without coming off as a jerk? How do I convey that margarine is not an acceptable substitute without upsetting the staff to the point that my food gets spat on?
