Its a great song.

Its an LBGT anthem.

But anyone can take inspiration from it whether they are LBGT, or not.

I can also take it from an autistic perspective. Did the singer (who was she again? Summers? Ross?) mean for it to be an LGBT song? It was the 80's (so I think) when the movement was slowly gaining popularity.

It was Dianna Ross.

Probably the title was a deliberate double entendre.

Debutantes have "coming out parties" (like sweet 16 parties).

But the term for a closet gay going public about being gay was already "coming out of the closet". So the lyrics were probably written so it could be taken either way ( as a straight girl, or as a gay person of either gender, being the narrator of the song).
