Only if it's a very delicate item that would get wrecked in the washing machine. I try not to purchase anything that I can't wash in the washing machine and I haven't hand washed an item in years.

I ignore dry clean only labels though, mostly. I will just throw smart blazers in the washing machine even though they say dry clean only. I've even put silk dresses in the washing machine with no ill effects.

The only thing I've ever had issues with is items with beaded detail. I will hand wash them or dry clean then because if I put them in the washing machine the beads fall off. though, I tend to just avoid beaded items for this reason. I think, "that's pretty, but how will I wash it?"
