It's taken a life of its own. It's not just a short form of "brother" anymore. There's a bro subculture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bro_(subculture) .

I remember when you only ever saw the word "bros" on company vehicles and the like.

I'm not exactly sure when "bro" started to become a thing, but it was maybe the 80s or 90s.

Perhaps gang culture, where they would often call each other "brother", and it's just be abbreviated from that.
