I've never felt uneasy about a teddy bear before. I've seen old, tattered teddy bears, and they are still cute, where as if you see an old doll it can sometimes look creepy.
Even teddy bears that have a stare aren't creepy.

I own an old tattered teddy bear myself. He's lost most of his fur, he only has one eye, and his nose and mouth is all a ripped and unravelled mess. But he is still cute and not at all creepy in any way.

But if that was a doll with a missing eye and had holes, it would most probably be creepy to humans.
Why is this?

Dolls fall into the "uncanny valley", which is a perceptual/emotional quirk in people which causes them to get repulsed by something that is too antropomorphic to be a cartoon character, but too cartoony to be human. Teddy bears don't invoke this response because they're not human-like in appearance.

I wonder is it an an evolved response to keep you away from disfigured things.

Some people make dolls that are absolutely hideous looking, not cute at all. Teddy bears are pretty uniformly cute. They can get old and scruffy looking, but are not truly ugly like some dolls. I have seen dolls with ugly pug noses and eerie looking eyes.

I like dolls that look cartoony and not too much like real humans, but I do like stuffed animals that look realistic. I see those "reborn" baby dolls and I'm like "Eww, they look like they're dead! :skull: "That Uncanny Valley thing does make a lot of sense. But toy animals can look anthropomorphic and not creep you out.

Some dolls can be like the creepy paintings where it looks like the eyes are following you when you walk in front of it. They look like they're thinking of evil things they want to do to you when you're asleep.

Bears usually look like they need a hug. They can look sad sometimes. I have a bear that I feel sorry for because of that. It was sitting on my chair for about a week last year, and (even though I know it doesn't have feelings and its face can't change) I kept hugging it to make it feel better, but it still looked sad, so now it's in my wardrobe.

Teddy bears DO have feelings! :D

The top picture in the above post looks a bit like my teddy bear.

Is that bear made made of chicken skin? Gross! :eew:
They should name it Sal Monella.
What is it stuffed with, bread crumbs?

Well, there is an exception to every rule about teddy bears not being creepy.

Also a lot of people think Teddy Ruxpin is creepy, and he's a teddy bear. I thinks it's his eyes and his voice and stuff.

I love all dolls, wether their missing eyeballs or hair or paint, that's nothing a little TLC can't fix.

My mom collects antique dolls so I'm used to creepy dolls. My mom is cool like that.

Ah yes, I hated Lotso, and I liked the baby doll thing (can't remember what the name was). But the baby doll gave me the creeps in the scene where he's sitting on the swing. I don't think it would have been so creepy if Lotso had been sitting on the swing like that instead.

But the monkey with the bashing plate things was the most terrifying thing.
