the internet is crap
what is it good for?

-stalking people through facebook

-being a platform for amplifying your ridiculous fact void opinion on something no one cares about
All of the above is great to have. But there's something really bugging me about the internet that for some reason I just assumed was a given but appears not, something I have known for a long time, but chose not to believe it. But i think it's about time I spoke up.
Actual educational information.
When i have a question about something, i look to the internet. And i'm starting to get more and more miffed in regards to how bloody impossible it is to get answers to those questions. Things like the dietary requirements of a particular insect, or the gestation period for an insects eggs, or certain foods that were available during a certain period, or details of behaviours for specific animals... Yet, Donald Trump saying 'Bing' over and over again... you don't even have to search for it, it's just there!!
So little factual information on the internet and it makes me sad And what there is of it, you really have to go on the hunt of your life to find it!

The internet is a tool. It is a matter of how it is used.
It makes it easier to get into bad habits and do bad things but one has to have the inclination first.

I do feel that it is harder to get detailed factual information than it used to be. In part, no doubt, this is because there is simply so much more data available. But, I think a big part of the problem is that search engines now often use artificial intelligence algorithms which are trained by watching everyone's search behaviour. This is great if your internet behaviour is similar to the majority of other internet users, but much less effective for those of us with unusual interests or who are not simply looking for an echo-chamber to reflect our existing views about the world.

I have a possible solution for you. Go to the library at your local college or university and ask the librarian if they can help you find this information. Make sure you talk to an actual librarian though. People tend to not realize the full extent of the "super powers" of librarians.
For stuff like that I still use books written by people who are known experts in the relevant field. Admittedly my main interest is birds and there are a lot of highly detailed studies of individual bird species or families. There are probably rather fewer about insects but they do exist.
In the UK the Natural History Bookshop has a very extensive range of natural history books. With many of them being rather specialist books they do tend to be a bit expensive though, so I spend hours trawling through secondhand bookshops to see if I can find them cheaper first. A lot of my books come from secondhand sources and I only pay full price when I have to for books I particularly want. I usually have a good search through the reference lists at the end of most books to see if there are any others I want to read.
Generally I find the internet has less detailed information than specialist books and in any case I would much rather curl up on the sofa with a printed book than be looking at a screen.

I want a rant about the internet too.
The way hackers have got nothing better to do than to hack into people's online money accounts and cause grief.
The fact that there is actually an app to help hackers hack into other people's accounts. I mean, why?
I completely avoid doing any online banking. But not using my precious debit card online has it's own f*****g problems, because half of the shows from the 90s on Youtube have a fee you have to pay to watch it. I mean, how annoying is that? A show that isn't on TV any more and are not released on DVD, you'd have thought you'd be able to just access them on Youtube without having to PAY. I mean, some are kids shows, and kids don't have any money for crying out loud (no pun intended), and I'm sure parents aren't going to want to keep paying for stuff their kids watch on Youtube. Just greed. The internet wants your money.
The way sites bang on about cookies and you have to keep pressing 'I agree' to move on.
The way some webpages randomly jump up and down when you're trying to read, so you have to wait about a minute each time for it to finally settle.
The way there are loads of different browsers and they all get competitive. Why can't there just be ONE universal browser?
The way you get 14-year-olds that think they're so funny or clever by answering questions with poor spelling and with no useful information at all.
When you're looking for answers and you find the right question but no answers have been added. Or, worse, when there's about 60 answers but each one is literally "yeah I have that problem too". I WANTED A LOGICAL ANSWER, NOT EMPATHY. If you don't have an answer then don't bother answering the question with the same problem I have. Over 6 billion users on the internet, surely there must be people cleverer than me out there.
The way people advise you not to look up medical problems online. What, even the proper medical sites? Is everything I read lies then?
The way there are so many sloppy spellers it's unbelievable, especially now that we live in an age where spellcheck and predictive text exists (although I use neither, but I would if I couldn't spell).
The way so much stuff on the internet is American. I look for memes on Facebook pages and there aren't many that are British. Plus I have my Google settings set on UK-English but whenever I type something it often corrects it the American way. So if I say for example "why do I keep weeing?" it corrects me to "why do I keep peeing?" Agh!! 'Wee' is the right word. 'Pee' reminds me of everyone shortening it from 'piss'.
All the viruses out there drive me mad too. But I won't go into that right now as this post is long enough.
So, anyway, that's my rant about the internet for today.

It's called the "filter bubble", which means you're locked into a bubble of what Google wants you to see, and everything else is filtered out. Google isn't a "search engine" anymore, it's now a "decision engine" (although I think Bing owns the trademark for that phrase, so Google can't legally use it). If you can't "decide" what film you want to see at the theatre tonight, Google is here to help!

That post is a lie. So is this one.
The following sentence is true. The preceeding statement is false.

I'm bored out of my skull, let's play a different game. Let's pay a visit down below and cast the world in flame.
I get annoyed when content on YouTube is monetized, and there's no way I'd pay for any of it. There's still an astonishing amount of good free stuff there as well though.
One useful tip is to install one of the better YouTube downloaders, like 4K (https://www.4kdownload.com/), because sometimes an excellent film or other item that you might not expect to be available, at least free of charge, comes up on YouTube, but is soon withdrawn, for copyright reasons or whatever. Using a decent downloader enables you to save it permanently to your hard drive and watch it at any time offline.
I've seen quite a lot of rare, interesting stuff like that appear briefly then disappear within weeks or even days. A dvd of one of the films I downloaded a few months ago was being offered at £200 on Amazon recently.
