I'm curious as to how many members talk to themselves out loud. For example, at home, taking a walk, etc.

I used to a lot as a kid but I kept getting in trouble for it so I forced myself to learn not to do it too much unless I'm by myself.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that does it. I guess one reason I talk to myself out loud is that I'm my own friend. :D

Yes, lots, and I don't always realise that I'm doing it (until I notice the funny looks I'm getting!) I try to narrate my way through things silently, but it usually leaks out once I'm not paying attention to my self-control. It's useful sometimes - it helps me to overcome executive function problems to hear myself speak my way through tasks; much more than if I try to do it in my mind only.

I say words and phrases out loud to myself sometimes.

I do often.

When people say “what”? I just mention I think out loud.

At home I not only talk to myself, but I tell myself jokes or even short stories. I have no one else to tell them to anyway, so what if it makes me look like I'm schizophrenic or have multiple personality disorder?

I try not to do it when I'm in public, but occasionally I let stuff slip out, like a comment about something I'm looking at while out shopping.

I almost never talk to myself out loud.

Inside my head, I do often, but otherwise I am quite quiet.

What you said about talking yourself through executive functions is spot on for me. Exactly! Definitely one of the ways I talk to myself out loud.

When I get ready for the workday, for example, I'll give myself directions out loud such as:

"After showering, I'll brush my teeth." "Don't forget to bring the envelopes." "Tonight we're going out to dinner as a family."

I'm giving myself directions out loud and reassuring and encouraging myself to stay on task and keep going.

Absolutely no way I can actually do this.

I often write random things to myself in a notebook I keep, though.
