A term for "songs getting stuck in your head on a loop".

Often when I hear a new song on the radio and then download it on to my phone from YouTube and listen to it, it becomes stuck in my head and plays on a loop.

I know everybody gets this but it drives me mad! It's like a tinnitus but in my brain instead of my ears, but still just as annoying and distracting.

I've tried listening to the newly-downloaded song on my phone a few times today so that the loop might break in my head, but it didn't. I tried memorizing the end of the song so that I can play the end in my head (apparently that's supposed to trick your brain into thinking that the song is finished), but each time I do that the same loop plays over again, over and over. Aaaarrrggghhhh!! !

I've even tried doing a puzzle but my brain seems to multitask; playing a song on a loop whilst being able to solve a puzzle! And I've even tried (silent) reading but then I start to read the words in the tune of the song in my head!

Jesus Christ, WHEN WILL THIS LOOP STOP???! !!


Ps. It's the song "Hymn for the weekend" by Coldplay. I heard it on the radio the other day and decided I liked it, but now the main chorus won't stop playing in my head!

Even after a number of years I still haven't recovered from seeing that puppy dog in that TV commercial who sings in a little boy voice:

"there aint no bugs on me

there aint no bugs on meeee..

There maybe bugs on some of you mugs..

but there aint not bugs on meeee….."

I have songs that get stuck in my brain for years on end. They pop up sometimes if there's a trigger as a consolation or encouragement or piece of advice. Really it is weird.

For instance:

There is this song by Radiohead that quotes: "Everything in its right place"
It often pops up when I'm stressed that things are not the way they should be.

Or this lyrics by Mars Argo "Everything is A-OK"
It often pops up when I am stressed.

And many more. fun :D

I thought re-occuring songs that would repeat in ones head were natural? Something everyone gets? If my mind is not thinking up something else I often get tunes going round my head... But this is normal isn't it?

It's always the songs you hate that get stuck in your head. Commercial jingles are the worst. (Although I think that cat food commercials are very cute. Pet food ads are the only ones I can watch without getting sick.)

I do have movie scenes and guitar riffs that go on in my head. Despite my big playlist, I listen to songs repeatedly and skip to the best part.

It looks like "Eat Worms!! !
Mind you. Worms in peoples ears? No thanks... :D Never heard that term before I read this thread.

I was wondering if someone would mistake it for "eat worms". :lol:
I think it's a new slang. I hadn't heard of it until recently.

The song that's stuck in my head is actually a song a like though, but it's still annoying to hear it on a loop in my head.

I also often get the music from the rides on Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 when I play the game on my PC. :lol:

When I used to have a games console, I used to turn the music off as I found I needed the music off to play the games.

Eat worms! The horrible brain-eating worm-the song that gets stuck in your head and makes it hurt so bad you think your brain is getting eaten up!

The jingle of our local ice-cream van drives me up the wall. Every time I manage to shake-off the ear-worm, the next visit sets it off again. My sound memory is exceptionally vivid too; I've sometimes had to stop and remind myself that he doesn't come around at 2am because the the ear-worm is so convincing that I can't always tell if I'm really hearing it or not.
