How I Became An "IstominFan"
Five years ago today, I turned on my television to watch Wimbledon. By chance, I discovered a new favorite player, Russian-born Denis Istomin, who plays for Uzbekistan. He was ill and was being treated in a medical time out. I had compassion for him and became interested in watching him. His third-round opponent was Stan Wawrinka, Roger Federer's Swiss countryman. When Wawrinka slipped and fell during the match, Denis Istomin walked up to him and asked if he was okay. That act of sportsmanship on Istomin's part made me a fan of his. I researched his life story and, wow-what a story it was. He overcame a car accident to make the ATP tour, winning titles in Nottingham, England, Chengdu, China, defeating Djokovic at the 2017 Australian Open and winning the Asian Games gold medal in Palembang, Indonesia.
Denis Istomin's kindness and sportsmanship makes him one of my favorite players. Federer and Nadal are still my favorites of all time, but Denis Istomin is my inspiration as a tennis player. It was Denis who inspired me to pick up a racket for the first time at age 50 and I now use the same brand he uses, Technifibre.
Denis, I am a fan of yours and would love to meet you. Yours is a story that must be told.

Interesting story.
Would you consider the depth of your fascination an autistic thing?
