To be honest, WhatsApp for me is a great invention, even though I dont always like how it tends to replace normal phone calls because people get used to texting a bit too much.
I like using it, but not to make it replace normal phone calls. It's better for me that way, to use it as a method of communication when I'm at a noisy area or at work, and cant answer a normal phone call. That's how I enjoy using it.

It's sort of a variation on "What's up," I believe.

If you don't have a "smart phone," you can't get WhatApp.

I have a smart phone. I just don't know what it is. I googled. What's the difference with Facebook messenger?

You can make phone calls and text with WhatsApp. I think you can only text with Facebook Messenger, though maybe you can make phone calls with that, too.

Yes, you can make phone calls on Messenger. I don't do it, though.

If you can do both on Facebook Messenger, then it's redundant to get WhatsApp.

Most people I know don't use Facebook, so WhatsApp is great because all you need is a phone, no Facebook account.

Is it connected to the user's email or phone number?

I use it everyday to talk to my friends. I only make phone calls to call my parents, a doctors office or business, never make social phone calls. I like communicating through writing, plus I can send pictures, gifs, memes etc that you can't do in a phone call.

It's nice to use it for instant communication with people I know who live far away or even in another country.

One on one text "conversations" are quite private on there and you can exchange photos or videos as well as "chat" in writing. But you can also make or receive voice calls if desired.

But I don't use it nonstop. Not even every day. I don't want to let any technology be my master!

What's the difference between WhatsApp & Skype :?: I never used either but I used to use Yahoo & MSN messenger & ICQ back in the day.
