I heard a woman at the store today use the word "s**t" when talking to her 4 or 5-year-old daughter. She said to her "we don't need a cart we're not getting a bunch of s**t today." She acted like that was perfectly okay.

Does this shock you?

I learned how to swear like a soldier before I entered kindergarten.

That was back in 1962.

I got a whipping with a belt for saying "damn" when I was six years old---in 1967.

My brother got the same treatment for saying "Oh, man!" at the supper table in 1972!

The irony is that Dad started off by saying, "You stop that G** D***ED swearing!"

I find it disgusting whenever a parent swears at their own kid or around them. People these days can't even have a normal conversation without saying these nasty words. There once was a time when if all you said was "ain't" to anyone, people would gasp in horror.

I just can't understand it. I'm like, "Eww, do you kiss your kid with that mouth of yours?"

"These days"? What you describe has been going on for at least as long as I remember (50+ years).

Well its just a word...with those curse words the only thing that makes them such is people deciding that's what they are. I don't see what is wrong with saying s*it around a 4-5 year old unless you are using that or other words to scold the child, like 'we don't need a cart, we're not getting a bunch of sh*t' is ok to me 'shut your f*cking mouth and quit your wining you piece of sh*t' in reponse to a kid having reached their limit for being at the store, would not be ok with me.

I mean if people didnt treat sh*t like a bad word, then it wouldn't be one...and actually I have liked that word since I was like 5 of course wasn't allowed to say it but I always thought it was funny whenever I got to see a movie where adults used it.

Maybe I was just raised differently, that's all. Or maybe it's just me. I have always hated the word and most swear words in general. There were words that I wouldn't say as a kid that people say all the time now because I *thought* they were swears, like "snot" or even "butt".

It feels like everything I do like is wrong, while everything I don't like is perfectly okay. Even on WP. :(

No, I don't think that it's you, per se. I was raised in a similar environment (apparently), where even saying the word "poop" on the playground earned me a stern lecture from the teacher and a negative comment during the next parent-teacher conference.

The way my parents treated me later that day, one would have thought that I had screamed every filthy and foul word at the top of my lungs while burning my draft card and stomping on the Bible and the American flag.

All I said was "poop".

Oh yeah?

Well before I could even sit up on my own I had already learned George Carlin's seven forbidden words and more....and this was back in 1783!

I don't think it's a big deal, though it'd be better to not use it.

I hear parents swearing around or even at their kids fairly often.
I actually just watched the ep of South Park about the word sh!t. Everyone is super excited that a cop drama show said it. It boosted the ratings alot so the network started using it a lot in their shows. People kept getting sick & dying & to make a long story short, people find out that the word sh!t is called a curse word cuz it's a word that is cursed & it caused the black death when used too often.

Where's the shocking and outrageous part of the story?

Sounds like a happy ending, at least she didn't suffer. 8)
