coffee loving bugs

I figured somewhere on this list there is someone who's special interest is bugs and would know the answer to this - we have these bugs in my office - they look like ants, but are not ants - however, they will eat coffee and coffee creamer over sugar - I like biology a lot and this just blows my mind - they should like the easiest food source - which would be sugar . . .
Yesterday when I went to lunch there was a little drop of coffee on the counter and they were all gathered around it drinking it and there was also sugar spilled on the counter and they were ignoring that . . .
Can anyone think of any reason they might do this? I've been experimenting with them and they will literally ignore spilled sugar in favor of coffee and coffee creamer . . .

Now this is why I feel so at home on this site...That's exactly the type of thing I would be noticing and trying to figure out!

As far as them gathering around sipping coffee, they're probably NT office bugs. Actually, I do hope someone has some good information on this for you-this is an interesting question.

do they have another source of water?

Some animals cannot metabolise sucrose or cannot eat it. Most likely they don’t know what is so leave it alone. Most insect have eyes, they may be attracted to the colour like broken down plant and fungi debris in water. They are also attracted to chemical signals a sort of smell.
