I think that it can be interesting to note how someone's approach might change after learning about a topic. For instance, as a media student I've learnt about basic narrative structure and film editing. This has affected how I view TV shows and films. So when I'm watching a TV show, I'm enjoying the story, but I also have a habit of analysing the work at the same time. For example, complimenting the use of an effective match cut and wondering what equipment and techniques were used to even out the lighting imbalances a certain scene would create.

One part of me is viewing it as a media student and the other is a passive audience member watching for entertainment. Although the analysing aspect is also fun for me.

Have you learnt about something and that information has changed how you view it? For example, learning about music theory and appreciating certain song aspects more than you otherwise would etc. If so, how did your approach / perspective shift?

I work in the energy and environmental field. Through my experience I’ve learned that most issues are incredibly nuanced. As exciting and empowering as it would be to take and support a super aggressive approach to conservation, clean energy, mitigation/prevention, remediation, and advocacy, I know far too much. I know how unfeasible it is to abandon fossil fuels right now. I know how water rights work, and how difficult/unconstitutional it could be to change grandfather clauses. I know the relative impact of individual recycling/reducing efforts compared to those of corporations, and how many ways corporations find loopholes to get around their obligations so that the needle isn’t really moving at all. I know what actually happens in recycling centers, what happens with trash, and how now that China no longer is accepting our plastic, recycling is just a different kind of trash.

This is all a super bummer. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean.

PS composting is legit.
