The playful elephant was feasting on sugarcane at a farmer's field in Chiang Mai, Thailand when it saw humans approaching and apparently decided that the best course of action would be to hide behind a pole much smaller than itself.

The elephant even stood still as locals shone a spotlight at it, hoping to not get spotted.

I read the question and thought about it.
I think the possiblest way might be to mislead the light on purpose around someone.
OK, I forgot about the elephant ...
