Hey, all. Have you tried learning another language on your own? I've been doing this since 2000 with Japanese. It is quite the complicated language. I've also gotten into French, because I love Canada. :D

What about you?

I'm using Duolingo to help me improve my Spanish.

I minored in French. I have some Spanish now due to my work and can carry on conversations. My grandson is Swedish, so I think I should use some basic phrases. The latter are self taught.

But in spite of all my studying, there’s a wall I haven’t been able to breach in any language until I got Rosetta Stone. That method has moved me along in a way other systems, including my college classes.

Blaze is certainly a smart lady.

I know a few words of French and Spanish.

When I tried to speak French in France, I just got looks.

I'm studying Mandarin Chinese (2nd year now)… it will be nice to be able to talk to an additional 1.12 billion people.

I'm attending weekly classes (now online because of f*****g COVID, though). And even though i live in Denmark, I'm lucky to have a teacher who is both from China and a university trained teacher by profession.

I am also using online apps (currently Skritter) to build vocabulary. Once I have cleared an initial threshold - knowing about 1,000 characters (Hanzi) I plan to start reading actual Chinese texts (newspaper articles etc.). Based on my current trajectory, I'll reach this point around summer this year.

However, I am - as I suspected - progressing much faster with my written Chinese than with my oral skills (I already finished Chinese on Duolingo), so I'll have to do some serious catching up. The ideal scenario would be an opportunity to work in China at some time, but at this point, even getting into the country is probably out of the question.

Fortunately, written Chinese is widely considered to be *the* most difficult language to learn, so if I can handle this, then the rest will somewhat more manageable.

I took Spanish for five years for my language requirement in school and I want to learn more. I also want to teach myself some ASL.
