This is a strange topic but on the radio there was a discussion about Americans not owning Kettles or Jugs so i was wondering if any of our american friends on here do you own a kettle and if you don't how do you make a cup of tea.

It puzzles me as well though I rarely have hot drinks. Prehaps they tend to keep to cold drinks like me?

I guess I've grown up with having a hot drink after a meal.

I used to own one. I don't anymore. Some people use a coffee maker, they just brew a pot of hot water. Personally, I use a small, regular cooking pot to warm up some water. Though I generally don't just make hot water, I'll put almond milk in there too.

When I was younger my American relatives said they couldn't buy electric kettles in their state because of fire regulations, or something like that. It was a big deal for them to visit us, buy an electric kettle, and smuggle it home through airport security. It felt dangerous, like they were going to be arrested on drug charges or something.

I think they had access to stove-top kettles, just not electric ones.

We have an electric kettle. I don't believe they were available in the US until recently, though.

I found it very convenient when I was staying in the UK.

I insist on having a steam-kettle upon the stove, filled and ready to boil water for an afternoon cuppa.

My lovely Asian wife uses the microwave oven instead.

What is a regular kettle? All the kettles I've had all my life have been electric.

I've seen online they put stuff in the microwave. :o Plus: coffee is more their drink than tea is.

The jugs thing surprises me more than the kettle thing. Cos if you don't have a kettle and only drink coffee not tea, that makes sense if you have a coffee maker. But how does one get by without a jug? No sauces?

I have a stove top kettle and drink gallons of hot tea in the winter. In the summer it’s iced tea.
Jasmine tea is one of my favorites.

To me, it's a "regular" kettle.

Many people in the US still use them.

I have a really nice kettle that's made in Germany. I also have a green kettle that I like to use.

Lots of American women have nice jugs  I'm sorry I couldn't resist the dirty joke, maybe cuz I'm drinking IDK :lmao:

My mom uses an old-time aluminum kettle that she heats up on the stove top for her coffee & hot chocolate. Mom's into antique stuff & she also has a collection of various sized aluminum kettles that she only uses for display & collecting purposes & my parents have lots of other various antique stuff as well. My girlfriend liked the idea of using an aluminum kettle so my parents bought Cass one they found at an antique shop. It was very cheap cuz there was a bit of rust on it but my dad scraped it off with a brillo pad type thing & made it shine after a bit of effort. Cass never used it much thou cuz instant coffee was easier & faster for her. She'd just heat the instant stuff up in the microwave. Her aunt & uncle insisted on buying her a Keurig Machine a few years ago cuz they had one & really liked it. Cass seldom used it but started using it most of the time for her coffee & hot chocolate after we moved into our new place a year ago & got settled in. We have a lot more counter space in our current kitchen than at our old place so it's easier to leave the machine out & access it. Cass thinks the Keurig is a nice compromise between the quality of an old-time aluminum kettle & the convenience of instant stuff that you heat in the microwave. Her main issue is the cost of buying the packs of coffee or hot chocolate for the machine.

I don't have a kettle, I just heat up water in the microwave. It takes 2 minutes to get really hot water.

I had a russell Hobs kettle but when it stopped working I just bought those sunbeam plastic Jugs they are just as good and you don't have to fill them up every time you have a cup of Coffee or tea.
