There's an AITA about it.

Sounds made up.

Her boyfriend and his parents eat oranges whole (peel and all) every Saturday morning instead of peeling them.

They get cross at her for peeling them.

Is this a tradition in part of the world?

I eat them whole sometimes. The peel is edible and has more nutrients! It tastes like crap though because it's bitter. Still, you won't die from eating it.

Also, banana peels are edible and have more nutrients too... but they're hella gross. Even more gross than orange peels. Don't eat them. lol

When I was about 10-13, I ate orange peels. I just liked them.
I still sometimes eat the white parts of it.
My husband thinks it's gross.

I could never eat a whole orange. I don't like the taste of the skin. I like the inside of an orange that actually tastes like an orange.

Some folks wont even eat the skins on apples, and some folks dont even eat the skins of baked potatoes.

Both of the above folks are....sick and pathetic...in my honest opinion.

Never thought about the opposite. Eating orange peels, and eating banana peels.

I worked with a guy who would grind up fruits in his blender to make a breakfast smoothie. He would sometimes grind up bananas with the peels still on.

I sometimes make sun tea. And Ive experimented by tossing orange peels into the jug water to flavor the tea( and then throwing away the orange peels). The result was so so in flavor.

In a less controversial use - grinded orange peels are great to add to cakes. They have a lot of aroma.
Candized orange peels are common on donuts here.

I've made whole orange cakes where you boil the oranges, then blend them up.
I like to add the zest in cooking.
I like preserved lemons with the skin on and pickled limes.
But I've never eaten a raw orange with the skin on.
Must try it sometime.

Yeah that was my reply actually.

I've heard of it in cakes but never raw.

I have eaten the white bit before, it's called the 'pith' in my family (or maybe in general?) and used to be common when I was growing up.

Interesting that people do it!

AITA seemed to gang up on the family that did it and say 'no that's weird'.

I still think it's weird/invasive to tell other people to eat something just cos you're eating it though. Maybe nice to say 'look we're eating now, would you like to eat something else or drink or just sit with us' but telling other adults what to eat = a bit controlling.

Ok, tried it.
Starts off ok, then the bitterness kind of creeps up on you and kicks you in the back of the head.
Changes the lovely pebbly juice burst into a flat, chewy texture too.
0.5 out of 10, would not recommend.

The only time I've ever stuck an orange peel in my mouth was to reenact a scene from 'The Godfather.'

Sometimes I'd eat them as a kid, but they really didn't taste good. I must have a stronger aversion to bitter foods than most people my age.

When I was younger I sometimes cut the peel into the shape of pointy orange teeth and slip them into my mouth for a joke. But if you leave them in there for long they'll start burning the inside of your mouth.

When I was little I'd often stick whole oranges or apples into my mouth and then try to talk, because I'd see characters in cartoons and sitcoms sticking them into other people's mouths to shut them up, and it was funny. Those were good times.

Was that on Reddit? I think most of the questions on that sub are fake.

How exactly do people do that? Do they take a bite, or do they cut it up with the peel and all? Or do they eat the peels and the rest separately?

Yeah.

I agree.

I was wondering if it had any basis in fact.

Am I the Angel isn't much better. They judge the wrong people imo.

But at least they call out the fake stories.
