Where do Americans who can't afford utility/laundry rooms put their washing machines?

Some buy small-load, stackable machines and park them near the kitchen sink.  Others simply take their laundry to the local coin-operated laundromat.

Interesting.

I'm asking cos we almost always have it in the kitchen unless we have a big (relatively expensive) modern house with a utility room.

Americans on other sites say that's weird.

Dad says that the Spanish put it in the bathroom. I think that would be inconvenient.

British people only really use the laundry in my experience if it's dry cleaning (so fancy stuff) or if the washing machine broke or if they live in a one room flat 'bedsit'. It's very rare not to have a machine over here.

Or one does it the old way. By hand.

Ours is in the the basement, next to the furnace and water heater.

Ours are in an alcove off the back hallway.

I do my laundry by hand.

I've never seen it in the kitchen here. Most places come with at least a little closet for them to fit in. Or in a basement or I've seen some in the garage. I'm super sensitive to smell... there is no way I could have it in the kitchen. The smell of laundry detergent and downy mixing with cooking smell, I'm pretty sure I'd vomit.

My girlfriend watches various shows where houses get remolded or fixed up, or people look at houses for sale to potentially buy one; & when the houses don't have a utility/laundry room, the machines tend to be put in areas like the kitchen or next to it, bathroom or next to it, in a mud-room, or in the garage. Sometimes the washer & dryer are stackable & one is on top the other & they are sometimes put inside a closet like alcove with a door so the machines are hidden. My dad works in construction doing carpentry(well he just officially retired but he's still working a little on the side) & he mostly worked on homes but he also worked on businesses & other stuff including big ships. Anyways most of the houses dad worked on had utility/laundry rooms but sometimes the utility/laundry rooms also doubled as mud-rooms & a few times the washers & dryers were in the garage. Lots of times the homeowners had a bit of money; doctors, lawyers, managers for insurance companies, higherups in the offshore oil field industry type professions. The contractor may of made great money but my dad sure didn't; my parents were lower class when I was little but worked their way up to lower middle class as I grew up by LOTS of hard work. My dad built our house(the house I lived in till I moved in with my girlfriend 8 years ago) himself(he had a lot of help of corse but he didn't use a contractor & was involved with most of the work) & the washer & dryer are in the utility room which is next to the kitchen. The room gets used for other things as well, there's a big freezer in there & dad keeps some tools in the room to use around the house.

Are you bothered by the smells of dishwashers

Nick007: not really, the one we buy is very mild, my mom is super sensitive to smells too. And even when I lived alone i bought the same stuff. It has a mild citrus smell. But when we do deep cleaning of the kurig and other stuff with vinegar I have to wear a mask bc its nauseating to me. We have to vent the kitchen afterwards or I can't eat anything. It's frustrating, but nothing I can't deal with if I plan properly.

I definitely like the idea of laundry being in a mudroom. I think thats the most logical place.

I wish I have a washer & dryer machines, it would be easier, cuz I can’t use the laundry room in my apartment building, I been hand washing, but I shouldn’t stand up alot. I have ALOT of problems in my feet & legs. I can’t handwash my blankets.

Not an American but here the standard is to keep your washing machine in the bathroom.

My washer and dryer have Wi-Fi, yet the detergent dispenser isn't working and the dryer takes 4 hours to dry my bedding. Wi the Fi, I ask?

Ours is in a separate small laundry room between the kitchen and attached garage. It's a common location for a lot of houses around here. Some put them inside the garage. Others in the basement. Another location that's more common in townhomes, and some detached houses, is in a large closet designed just to house those machines. Same in apartments/condos - which also are more likely to have it in the bathroom than any other dwelling type just for better space utilization.

I don't personally care where it is all that much. Might be slightly nicer if ours was in the basement - then it would be another floor away from my bedroom and I might not be able to hear it at all with earplugs in to sleep. The only place I care it is is on site vs. renting some place where you have to go to and from a coin operated laundromat - what a colossal waste of time and money. I've never rented a place without in suite/on site laundry. It's about the only convenience I require in a place to live - But - if I had to I would go to a laundromat.

I'm starting to wonder if the bathroom thing is a continental Europe thing? With Poland & Spain doing it?

And I keep forgetting just how many Americans have basements!

Attics on the other hand are fairly common here. I want to develop my attic & turn it into an art studio.

Based on Asian tv shows bathroom is common their too. Often in the changing room area before thd second part which is the shower/bathroom
