The purpose of the dictionary or the terms it contains? Do you find slang offensive in general?

When you consider the people by and for whom it is primarily written (e.g., ableist, genderist, racist, sexist males), it is not surprising that you or anyone else would feel this way.

Perhaps, but if you want to know what is happening in the world, you need to face some of the unpleasantness.
And there is plenty of that.
Trust me, I know.

The Urban Dictionary is ..an URBAN...dictionary.

A guide to street talk, slang, and the latest in down and dirty gutterspeak.

So what were you expecting?

Its not something you just read for pleasure like a book you might read cover to cover...like you and I might pick up and digest an essay, or biographical book.

Its something you go to when you encounter particular piece of edgy slang that you dont know. Like if you wanna know just exactly WHAT the phrase "gotta bag it up... no diggity" means ( a hit song a few years ago). Like a seven-eleven shop. You go for one thing, and then leave. Not a place to loiter. Type in the phrase in google...and it takes you to the Urban Dictionary. And you get an unfiltered group of folks giving their unfiltered take on the meanings of the latest in unfiltered slang.

Well said. I find myself doing Google searches & ending up there fairly often. I'm someone who finds offensive humor very funny but I can not keep up with all the latest offensive terms or slang in general. Here's a funny song about Urban Dictionary & I did not know what half those terms meant till I looked em up so Urban Dictionary does fill a purpose

& for those who think that the Urban Dictionary is too offensive, here's a song you might relate to by the same artist

I only go there for the definitions.
Why else would I?

Went on there in the early teens, but I cannot believe any one still goes on there.... They're very antisemitic, lesbophobic, ableist and autismphobic. Somebody got butthurt about a website knowing the history of emotive hardcore more than them and they wrote a seething definition of it. I looked that website up recently. Lol. Also looked up my nickname and birth name in 2012, and it wasn't very nice.

Urban Dictionary is full of offensive terms.
Are dictionaries of offensive terms offensive? A philosophical question, I guess.

I find Urban Dictionary useful - sometimes I need to search it to understand what some WP users write

Exactly. Its useful- to learn that one piece of hip slang someone is using. Its not a place you go to to hangout (like Facebook, or like WrongPlanet, or even like Wikipedea). And in my experience you dont even "go to" the UD itself. You google that new term, and google directs you to the UD, because thats the place where edgy terms are discussed .

My first encounter with the UD was like ten years ago when I googled "santorum" (with a small s), and got directed to the UD.

Learned that it is gay slang for a certain sex act that was named that on purpose after the anti LGBT senator Rick Santorum. The sex act so named is so gross that... . Well its the reason that I am now amazed that anyone would be amazed that the UD is "gross".

I guess that you could say that I was... traumatized!

Without UD (or Family Guy or American Dad), I wouldn’t have known what a San Diego Thank You is.

Dont know what a "San Diego thank you" is.

And I am...not sure that I... wanna know!

---

That "Dont Be obscene" song posted above reminds me of that time, a few weeks ago, that I drove past that pleasant suburban residential street in my town named "Morning Wood Drive".

Probably named by some developer in the Fifties who had know idea that "morning wood" would be slang in 2020.

I'm pretty sure it's at least 90% random things people come up with themselves or within their personal circles, rather than actual slang that's in use. Most of it is vulgar juvenile jokes.
