The other night, I lost power for a few hours, right around sunset. Too dark to do much, but too early to go to sleep. So, I lit a candle and turned on a portable radio. (There had been heavy winds, I guess something was knocked out.)

It's interesting. I managed to find a radio station playing old radio programs from the 1940s. Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, another one about a guy named Cpt. Bart Friday. I guess this is what people did before television. I never would have known about this radio program had the power not gone out. Strange blessing in disguise.

More interesting, when the power came back on, the radio station got "fuzzy." It had been crystal clear beforehand, but once the lights came on, some static became noticeable. Is it "light pollution" from the bulbs or is it the WiFi messing with the signal?

LED lamps, those "twisty" CFL lamps, and phone chargers are the most likely culprits.  Basically, any miniaturized electronic device could be at fault.  There are also LED-based street lamps being installed all over, and some of them generate so much noise that DX-ing foreign broadcasts and amateur radio stations has become virtually impossible if one of those lights is installed near your house.
