What do you think about guns?

I'd never want one personally, I am for mild gun control, background checks, etc. I don't think everyone needs one but I respect the right for people to own one. I think requiring more training, background checks and so on is a good idea. Maybe have different permits for different guns with much more restrictions on more "deadly" weapons like assault weapons.

They are handy for killing the dogs which are running your cattle to death.
They are handy for killing the dogs and foxes and coyotes which are eating your chickens.
They are handy for killing the cougar which killed your dog.
(yeah, I live in a farm burg)
My parents found their guns handy for running out the burglars who broke in my parents kitchen door one night in the 1990s.
My Dad's sister found hers handy for running off the guys who were breaking in to her farmhouse in the early 2000s.
My aunt and uncle found their guns handy for running off the people who were trying to steal their cattle in the 1980s.
My grandfather found his handy for stopping the guy who tried to carjack him in the 1970s.
And ya know what was really interesting, none of my family members had to pull the trigger, just showing the gun and the intent to use it on the perp put an end to the crime in progress.

 But, see, my "feelings" about guns are "not impartial" since I have several family members who could well be dead if they had not had guns within reach as they were becoming crime victims.

Edit; gotta add how cool my grandfather was -- the carjacking happened in a traffic jam in Kansas City, Missouri, one summer night. Being a summer night granddad had the window down.
Fellow comes up to the window with a knife and informs granddad that grandad no longer needs the car.
Grandad lays a pistol barrel on the windowsill and asks the perp if he has a wife and kids.
Perp actually answers the question and says yes.
Grandad asks if they would like for the perp to come home tonight, and if they would, perhaps now would be a good time to do that.
Perp decided that now would indeed be a good time to do that.

They're interesting and I'd like to have one. I think they should have certain regulations though, and that it's not "oppressing" anyone to prevent people with a history of hospitalizations from suicide attempts or a history of violent crimes to have one, at least for a period of time in the former situation.

It's good for police officers and such to have them, and hunting one's own food is ecological and often more ethical than mass produced food, so it's good for hunters to have them. People with cattle can need them too to fend off wild animals, but other than that, I don't really see a reason why people should own guns. I'm not strictly against it or anything, but I think good background checks should be done to everyone and they should pass a set criteria before they could get a gun. The more dangerous the gun, the stricter criteria. I think it should also be checked frequently that the gun owners still meet the criteria they filled when getting the guns. And of course, purposefully borrowing a gun to someone who doesn't have a permit to carry one should be heavily punishable (is it already?)

I have friends who've over time talked me into buying a few (just to get me out shooting). It's a relatively expensive habit, particularly if you're shooting anything larger than 22 LR. IMHO knowing how to care for and maintain a fire arm is a useful thing to know, much like knowing how to change a tire, but past that I really don't get that excited about shooting. On one level, maybe absurdly, the environmentalist in me gets kicks in about hobbies that just burn resources sending lead into a wall, and for me at least going to a range is really boring unless its with friends.

They are loud and noisy. I am one who would likely walk up to someone pointing a gun at me and ask them what is wrong. I don't know why. To me, I want to try to make sense of things. The gun would be something that I would not think about as a danger?
Mind you, on the other hand, if I have time to think, I will then be very methodical in my approach knowing when to hide and when to run etc.

To me it's almost like staring at knives -- it's only cruel and fatal when it's aimed at certain directions.

Except guns are just much more troublesome in more ways than one.

I would've want to own one for self defences and academic reasons.

From my point of view regulations are moot point when what's enforcing it are too corrupted or unreliable.
There's just different creative ways to get hold of firearms.

And there are simply other ways to physically threaten, hurt anyone, cause chaos or defend one's self without a gun.

I think guns 1ce served a needed purpose but I think the US would be a hell of a lot safer these days if we didn't have guns here. Every day I'm hearing about another mass shooting & an unarmed minority getting shot. Then there were the unarmed peaceful protestors getting shot by rubber bullets & the armed Americans who stormed the capital in a desperate attempt to keep a losing president in power. It's a very good thing that I don't have a gun cuz I woulda blew my brains out a long time ago to get the hell out of this completely f#cked up world. I can only hope that the gun activists end up killing off the human race before our 1ce thriving planet & all plant & animal life on it dies.

I don't think anybody should own guns and the only people that should be allowed access to guns are police officers.

But I'm from the UK, where owning a gun is uncommon and it's illegal to carry any weapons around with you when you go out, unless you're a police officer.

Gun crimes are much lower here than it is in America.

It would not be surprising if a new era of Prohibition happens in the US at some point
in the future but with guns and not alcohol.

I think that a Walther PPK-S is a decent holdout piece, but that a Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum revolver has greater stopping power.

I think that researching the matter would find that guns are more popular than My Space is these days.

I don't like guns at all. There was a referendum in the 2000s about totally outlawing the sale (and I suppose later on also the ownership) of guns of any kind to anyone who doesn't have a specific need to have one and isn't specifically trained and licensed for it. I think that's exactly how it should be, and I voted for it. The proposal didn't go through, unfortunately.

As far as I know it actually is against the law to carry any guns in public though. I've never seen anyone other than police officers and security guards carrying a gun, and if I ever did, I would immediately assume the person is a dangerous criminal and get as far from them as possible as quickly as possible without drawing attention to myself.

Not a fan. I fired one legally in the UK and I hated it. I also remember when we had the Dunblane massacre, we had a gun amnesty so my grandfather turned over the guns he had from WW2.
