I just discovered there was a 1984 musical called "Pennies from Heaven" staring Steve Allen in (what was supposed to be) a non-comedic role. There were some very ambitious musical production numbers as the characters float in and out of fantasy and a very harsh 1930s reality. It was Allen's next film after "The Jerk" - and was supposed to be a departure from his usual kind of character.
It was apparently a box office flop but some critics loved it (others hated it). It has obtained some level of cult interest. Fred Astair, who is featured via clips from his old movies, was not a fan.
It was nominated for 3 Oscars (winning none) and Bernadette Peters won a Golden Globe for the film.
"Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote that 'it is like no other period musical. It is so far out, so unexpected, that it might well be described as experimental...As such, it's likely to elicit deeply divided reactions: Audiences will either love it or hate it.' " - wikipedia
It was based on a BBC 1978 tv series of the same name.
Clips of both are on Youtube.
I am not sure if I am intrigued or horrified by this discovery.
