I am 31 years old (will be 32 in September)

I was at my local supermarket recently and this guy in front of me got asked for ID. The thing Is in the supermarket I never got asked for my ID at all that day when buying my food. I was wearing a face mask and he wasn’t wearing a mask.

Does that mean I must look a lot older than my age? I have been told before I look a lot younger than my age.

I wouldn't read too much into it since you have no way of confirming what caused that outcome.

Kind of a put down though since I thought I looked young for my age

I am a few pounds overweight for my height as well. Maybe losing some weight would help me look younger?

People don't generally get asked for their ID when buying food.

Well maybe he was buying beer or liquor? at least that is the only reason I'd think of why they would ask for ID. of course I am in the U.S idk how IDing works in the U.K which if I recall is where you are at. But at least here in the U.S places usually only ask for ID if you are buying liquor, cigarettes or nicotine vaping stuff.

I mean to me seems it would probably be a good idea to get yourself an ID, even if you can't get a drivers license surely you could still get an ID card. I mean I am soon to be 32 and my ID is still a learners permit I do not have a drivers license lol. But would be legal for me to drive if my boyfriend is in the car since he has a drivers licence and the rule with a permit is you have to have a licenced driver in the car to legally drive.

I was never in a position to own a car so yeah just never updated my ID to a drivers licence, even though I could I just haven't had a reason to pay the fee for it yet...me and my boyfriend cannot even afford a second vehicle for me so what would even be the point...of the drivers licence.

The person in front of you probably was buying alcohol or cigarettes.

Were you buying either alcohol or cigarettes?

If not, only an idiot would ask for your ID.

Did that person have objections in regards to wearing a mask?

Since others have suggested that the person was buying alcohol & cigs I won't suggest that but I'll add that there are other things here in the US that can sometimes require an ID like weapons(firearms, knives/blades, stun-guns), adult entertainment(rated R DVDs, video-games rated M, CDs with lots of cursing, porn, & sex toys), pot(in places where legal), CBD products, Sudafed, & even cough syrup sometimes. I'm not sure how that stuff works in the UK though. It is also possible that there was an issue with the person's payment method like their credit-card or the store's policy with accepting checks that required the cashier to verify that the person had the same name as their payment method. Or the person was trying to get some kinda discount & needed to show proof that they were in college, a senior citizen, or in the military(here in the US they could have IDs showing that stuff)
