Maybe the US uses a cheaper gas than other countries....maybe a different octane rating?

I've always said (and I've worked in the Automotive Industry for many years..)
Anything that is safetied, can be insured and runs, less than $1,000 is worth it.

Anything made by any domestic brands (GM, Ford and Chrysler) would be safe bets as after market parts (brake parts, exhaust or engine components) are cheaply available compared to imports. Most salvage/parts yards have 10 domestic vehicles per 1 import or so.

The import car is more reliable, but you've got to pay a premium, IMO.
