I once saw an old DEMU unit come into Cardiff Central. The third rail elwctric systems last ages and are very durable but they do suffer from picking up current in the snow.
That's unfortunately the case with 3rd rail, I think they tend to go a maximum 120mph. I know the class 377 does (as in Southern trains). Probably the most reliable is the lines that use overhead.
The DEMU tend to not be environmentally friendly but is certainly universal in terms of what line it goes through.
Fun fact: Any trains that are class 100 and above but below 200 are usually DEMU units. Correct me if I'm wrong?
