Speaking more posh

I speak with a standard southern British accent (a bit monotone as well because I have AS). However I can do a posh accent as well but obviously it’s not really my natural way of speaking.


Just wondering if I practise talking more posher will i train my voice to speak like that all the time?

Accents are funny, sometimes people can spot a fake accent so it is better to be yourself. People also like people why sound like themselves. It might work to use more posh English but it might backfire. Hard to say. Like the uncanny valley. You don’t want to be on the wrong side of the valley, but being on the right side can make a big difference.

Depending on the accent, how posh you are perceived to be can greatly vary depending on location.

I have often joked that I am too Northern for the South and too Southern for the North.

Some people have deemed my voice rough or aggressive, especially when they know where I'm from. Others have called me posh. Sometimes in a derogatory manner (i.e. toff).

You can't please everyone.

Sometimes posh accents can sound like one is either stuck up, eccentric, or geeky.

I don't speak in a posh accent at all because I know it'd make me sound geeky. I lean on the cockney side.

If you're going to fake an accent, Mid-Atlantic is the way to go.

You can talk posh, but if you're still going to make statements like 'more posher', I feel it could backfire.

I prefer a Bogan drawl.

^I believe in the UK they're known as 'chavs'.

What about in Norway?

I've heard that it's now popular to speak with a quasi Jamaican accent.

If I go back to where I’m from now I can’t understand a word anyone says.

My friend from the west coast can’t understand the locals here.
