Punxsutawney Phil predicts another six weeks of winter.

With six weeks left in winter, Punxsutawney Phil predicted that he would get out of the burrow on Wednesday to perform his Groundhog Day mission.

Thousands of people from all over the country and other countries gather at Gobler's Knob to see if members of Punxsutawney's "Inner Ring" summoned him from a tree stump at dawn and saw his shadow.  After Phil’s prophecy was announced, the crowd repeatedly chanted, "6 more weeks!"

I never quite understood the concept, because winter always starts and ends on the same date regardless.

GH Day is always the midway date of winter, six weeks from the end.

It makes no sense to me, either.  It is just a little fun event.  Midwinter is actually tomorrow (Feb. 3), and the Equinox is 45 days later.  That is actually 6 weeks and 3 days of Winter yet to come.

Maybe they mean "6 more weeks of winter weather"?  Who knows?

Like I said, it is just a little fun event -- nothing special.

They come out to see if anyone has anything growing in the garden they can eat.
Called whistle pigs here.

Today, the weather is giving us a major wallop up where I live. We're expecting 9 to 16 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 40 Mph. What fun!

I know - Sorry, that's just me being literal and pedantic yet again. 8)

It's like when people say they're tired of winter in mid-December when winter hasn't even started.

How does GH Day work, again?
Shadow = bad weather or good weather?
Intuition tells me a shadow means good weather, or else there wouldn't have been a shadow?

* By the way, it's also Fred Flintstone's birthday *

Where I live, we would be lucky if six more weeks of winter weather is *all* we get.

Or maybe not because global warming.

If its cloudy and he doesnt see it- early spring.

Sunny and he does see it - six more weeks of winter.

Does seem a little backwards to me too. But thats the customary interpretation.

Canada's two foremost weather-minded marmots are at loggerheads.
Nova Scotia's celebrity groundhog, Shubenacadie Sam, is predicting a long, cold winter ahead, while Ontario's Wiarton Willie claims an early spring is on the way.

I prefer the long cold winters.
