I used to have a 1985 vw golf with a similar paint job and have always liked 60’s contis.. if this one was a few years older with sui’s I would have bought it already.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/it ... 141173114/

I still think it’s super cool looking. Ideally the interior is complete enough that with a thorough cleaning it could get collector plates with modified status for the paint colour so that insurance is super cheap. Biggest problem is where would I stick an extra car ? Could maybe store it outdoors at my uncles place nearby maybe.. just would be pretty dope to bug and at least just drive around a bit for a summer, then maybe sell it or store it depending on how things go.

Also, apparently of the body is good and interior cleans up it may be worth close to double this asking price.

I definitely don’t Need it.. but damn is it ever tempting to contact this guy and ask a few questions and if it checks out, maybe make the day trip to see it in person and if it’s solid and a good runner & driver just buy it and bring it back on the ferry. 8)

Need doesn't really matter as long as buying it won't negatively affect your life, i.e., you really can't afford it.

I save up what little money I have left over outside of emergency funds to buy myself something I don't need every few years, because I want to (usually an antique weapon, which I have zero need for at all).

Very lovely car,, am wondering about the mileage shown… it appears to be missing the cooling fan shroud .
Am a fan of that year car too. Sometimes if something is too good for it’s price, might look twice.
The engine compartment looks like it had been used more than the mileage listed .One might enquire about any engine or cooling system work it may have had? But it is a very lovely body style.

I could pay cash for it many times over. It’d be nice if it could have collector plates for $300/year insurance instead of $1800 or whatever the basic minimum is right now. Other than that, it’s finding a place to park/store it - I wouldn’t want to pay $300/mo for storage. But if I could park it at my uncles place and enjoy it a bit for at least one summer that’d be cool - but then I’d probably want to keep it longer seeing as I also have motorcycle riding to do and want to go kiteboarding again this summer soooo.. too many toys not enough time to play.

Yeah, storing cars is always one of those issues as they aren't exactly something you can put in a collector's cabinet. You need not use it if you just want it either, I mean, I have some antique Japanese swords/knives and I rarely touch them, sometimes I don't even look at them for a year or more, and that's things that fit in cupboards/cabinets.

If I were a wealthy man I'd buy a Ford V8 Interceptor (Mad Max). If it were my interest, I'd probably build one up myself from a junker. I guess there's always a way.

Showed the ad to my retired mechanic uncle who's into collector cars - he has a 1964 Impala SS in pretty fantastic shape that he bought out of Texas a handful of years ago. He figures if the car is actually super solid and in good mechanical shape that just CLEANING it will add significant resale value in a no-lose financial position.

Showed my dad and he thought it was neat. Didn't say a word about where I'd put it. I figure I'll ask my uncle if it could live at his place nearby. Alternatively I could maybe stash it on the side of the building at work for a little while.

Thing is, if I bought it.. would I make much time to play with it? I dunno. I'd envision cleaning the interior and maybe swapping the original wheels for something aftermarket MAYBE just for cool factor. But maybe I'd just drive it as is until it was time to let it go and let someone else enjoy it/if I needed to free up the cash or space etc.

Messaged the seller with several questions, he replied just now and said it'd be better to phone him - so - guess I'll do that rn and get some answers and see if this is something I'm going to pursue.. def don't need, but G damn is it ever my style! :D 8)

Just called and got some info on the car. It had a very thorough restoration in 1985 & ~20 coats of heavy flake paint laid on it. There's some cracking in the bondo on the joint where the roof meets the body, but otherwise the body is very very good.

Interior is old and dirty, but not ripped up - needs thorough cleaning. Turn signal stock end needs repair, but the signals still work. Passenger side window motor works but the window doesn't go up/down, so needs to be taken apart investigated and repaired. Brake cylinders were replaced, new carburettor but needs to be tuned a bit to run and drive away. Says if it were him he'd do new trans gasket kit, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gasket - probably cost $600 installed.

Said he'd take less than asking price for the car, too. It's been sitting outside all winter so he knows the windows don't leak lol - that's good. Probably gets about 8mpg so definitely not a road trip car lmao BUT would be super cool to cruise to the beach and downtown a bit here and there through the summer.

The price he needs to get out of it vs. the price my retired mechanic uncle thinks it's worth once cleaned up a bit = quite the spread. I could drive it around for a couple summers and still make money reselling it. I'm gonna call the mechanic uncle for some input & another uncle to see if I could store the car at his place.. and who knows, if the stars align maybe I'll go buy it next weekend.

I feel like at this point that's just a waste of an XB coupe, unless it was already butchered into a Mad Max prop. Those XBs are already into the 6 figures (although I'm not sure if they're over that threshold in USD).

I have a place I can store the car outdoors.

Might have to plan a little trip to the island with a fistful of cash and see if this car checks out as being in solid enough condition that I can’t lose $ on it.

You should buy that Continental and also a 1985 VW Golf to put in the trunk. I once owned a 73 Mercury Marquis and thought it was so huge the trunk could hold a spare car instead of a spare tire. An extremely smooth ride of course. Could barely feel speed bumps.

My first car was a 1983 Oldsmobile Delta 88 - another 2 door boat.

I have a place I could store this car outdoors. I'm going to call my uncle today and see what his schedule is to go scope it out as it's 3 hours away on an island. I suppose I'll need a 3rd person as well - he can't drive longer distances anymore due to MS. Maybe my aunt will come. Heck, maybe we'll take one of their grandson's and make a day of it if they're all up for it.

And then if it checks out I'll bring cash, get insurance, and drive it back - probably getting about ~8mpg lol while gas is at record high prices here. It's 180.9/L right now, so $6.85 cdn / us gallon for regular 87 octane. It'll cost something like $150-200+ to fill the gas tank in this car.. and won't drive very far lol. It'll cost approximately $47 in gas to drive to the beach and back. Obbbbviously if I buy this car I won't be driving it around daily.

My first car was a Ford Pinto, which fortunately didn't explode.

Ha! My uncle's first collector car was a Ford Pinto. It was in pretty good shape over all, but probably only worth about $6k or something like that when he sold it. It wasn't flawless, but it was in pretty good shape. He had other cooler cars when he was younger. Then when they inherited some money, he went and bought another 64 Impala SS to replace then one he used to have when they got married - he sold the car to pay for the wedding and the baby and my aunt told him if they could ever afford it he could buy another one. So, he went down to Texas with his grandson a handful of years ago, looked at a few, and brought one back. He's done some more work and minor improvements to it and it's in great shape - probably more like an ~$70-80K car.

Making arrangements to go view the car on Tuesday. If it checks out as being as solid as it seems, It'll be coming back from the island with me. And for the price, just getting it off the island and onto the mainland I'll be in a money making position should I resell it. Only way I could lose money on this car is through the gas tank lol as it'll cost $50-60 for gas to drive to the beach and back.. haha definitely not a car to drive around every day! (And I wouldn't need to - I have a fuel efficient 2013 Dodge Dart and a 1993 BMW K75 motorcycle to ride.)

Pllllluuuuussss I'm not gonna lie, this car is gonna be sick to use for a Pride party event in conjunction with my party promoter friend. Maybe I'll chauffeur some VIP's in it or something. 8)

I do hope it checks out super solid and I buy it! Otherwise it's a bit of a waste of a 2-3 hundred dollars for the day trip. But I suppose not a total waste if the value I get out of it is learning that this car isn't for me. 95% sure I'll be paying cash and bringing it back, though. 8)

Went to the bank and grabbed cash for the island trip. Now just have to reserve a couple spots on ferry sailings for Tuesday & everything's all arranged to bring this car over to the mainland and clean it up for summer cruising. 8) Really do hope it's a solid car and this works out!
