Questions:
α) What food items do you still use (eat) past their expiry date?
θ) What food items do you throw away once they reach their expiry date?

I tend to keep using dry stuff after its expiry date, such as tea leaves, cocoa powder, curry powder, rice, quinoa etc.
I don't use milk and most dairy products and most wet stuff after their expiry date.

I'm asking this question because I learned my lesson today with eggs. I always thought eggs are ok to use way past their expiry date. Today for the first time in my life I came across a bad egg. When I was about to cook eggs that expired in February, one of them gave off a subtle but distinct "moldy crawlspace-like" smell as soon as I broke it, though there was nothing wrong visually. I knew straight away it's not safe to eat it. Now I'm kind of put off eggs. I won't be eating eggs for a while. From now on I will not use eggs past the expiry date!

As someone who has suffered from emetophobia and a really bad fear of food poisoning, eating anything past its expiry date (or best before date as we usually call it where I live), makes me anxious even though I've heard it's still good, and it might still look and taste okay. The other week I dumped a whole one liter carton of milk down the sink because it was around three days past its date, and it just didn't taste or smell "right" to me, even though it might have been okay to someone else.

I know it's incredibly wrong to waste food, but I figure nothing is worth risking getting poisoned over. Every day food products are recalled because they contain listeria and salmonella and norovirus, it's makes me wonder what isn't recalled is even safe to eat. :(

^^I've had food poisoning four times. You can never be too careful. It's not a fun experience.

I tend to think that the only items that are safe to eat long after their expiry date are canned foods, which are sealed in some sort of vacuum, are they not? In 2008 I bought about 250 tins of mackerel, as they were on offer at 3 for £1,and ate the contents of the last tin about six months ago. The expiry date was 2013, lol. I was a bit fed up of mackerel by then, lol.

Here's content with reference from paid professionals,
https://www.consumerreports.org/food-sa ... 083080425/

A couple of points to note:

Quote:
According to a report from the NRDC and Harvard University, manufacturers typically use methods such as lab tests and taste-testing to set these label dates. But consumers have no way of knowing the background. In many cases, dates are conservative, so if you eat food past that date, you may not notice any difference in quality, especially if the date has recently passed.

and

Quote:
"As a general rule of thumb, most canned foods (for example, canned tuna, soups, and vegetables) can be stored for two to five years, and high-acid foods (canned juices, tomatoes, pickles) can be stored for a year up to 18 months, according to the USDA. Watch out for dents and bulges in cans, though. That might be a sign it’s time to toss those products.

If you’re still not sure whether a product or item is worth saving past its date label, a free app the USDA created, FoodKeeper, will help you determine how soon specific items—everything from oats to coconut milk to maple syrup—should be consumed if it’s stored in the pantry, or how long it will last in your refrigerator once it’s opened."

the main things to be wary of are foods which contain fats and oils, as those will go rancid past their expiry date and sometimes even before.

My dating status has an expiry date. There comes a time when it's just no longer feasible.

It wasn't a food item but while doing a deep cleaning of the pantry last year (2021) I discovered a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide which had an expiration date of 2015, its sides were bulging so it went straight to the trash.
Also found some peaches which had a use by date of 2018, they too went straight to the trash.

4+ decades ago i went through some of my late dad's old army C and K rations. they were all 20+ years expired, but still all edible and delicious. they were made to last for the duration, it seems.
