A desert is hot. A dessert is something you eat.

There is also a verb "desert" that is related to the noun "desert", but pronounced like "dessert".

I crashed on a desserted island once. Had to survive for 8 months off of nothing but chocolate, icing and rainbow sprinkles.

Not all desserts are hot. I heard Antarctica is a desert. And deserts that are very hot during the day cool off quite a bit at night. That's why lions sleep most of the day until it gets dark.

Desserts can be hot or cold, but they're always cool. :D

Yes. The Gobi desert is rarely hot because its so far north.

And if you define "desert" as any place that gets less than ten inches of rain a year than both polar ice caps are deserts, as well the tundra regions.

Has anyone ever produced a dissertation on these matters?

I miss you like the deserts miss the rain.

And then there are "just deserts".

My guess is that ice cream and retribution (but not the Sahara) are related meanings having to do with 'getting something deserved'. Getting dessert, and getting just desserts.

Desert the noun (Sahara) seems to be of an unrelated origin. It is derived from de-ZERT the verb. A 'desert' is a place that is 'deserted'(uninhabitated). Originally it meant any non cultivated land. Could be a wet swamp. The meaning got narrowed to mean a dry place without even wild vegetation. The archaic meaning is retained in place names like the state of Maine's "Mount Desert Island" which is a green and well watered but uninhabited park on a rock off of the coast. And in the theme song of "Gilligan's Island" (now theyre stranded on this uncharted desert island...with Gilligan, the Skipper too, the Millionaire and his wife.....").

Sorry ...if this sounds like a...dissertation on the subject.

Dont know how the word "dissertation" relates to either desert or dessert.

"desserts" is "stressed" spelled backwards.
