A cat showed up yesterday and asked me to let him into my yard

We hung out in my yard for 3 hours while I worked on art

Today when my partner left for work at 6:30am, he says the cat darted into the house and he had to pick him up and bring him out

When I got up at 11am he was meowing at the back window, so I hung out with him in the backyard again

It's 9:30 pm and he still hasn't left. He even stayed while it rained (he sat in a flower planter and I put an umbrella over him so he could stay dry)

He seems very healthy and happy but I'm starting to wonder if he's a stray, or lost. What should I do? How can I find out?

Call your animal services people.
If this keeps happening you could take him in and they'll scan him for a microchip.

Will they come out and scan him or do I need to bring him in to a vet myself?

In the meantime should I keep him comfortable or try to ignore him for a while? If he does have a home I'm worried that I'm being too welcoming and it's discouraging him from leaving. I haven't fed him though, because that would for sure keep him hanging around

It's past midnight now, and I went out to check if he's there. He wasn't in my yard at first but then he showed up out of nowhere when he heard me.

I think tomorrow I'll call the city's help number and ask what to do. If he doesn't have a chip I might consider keeping him, but I have a cat and she doesn't tend to like other animals

This is occupying a lot of my mind, I hope I can figure out what to do about this cat

If you’re not feeding him but he looks healthy then somebody must be taking care of him.
If he lived outside all the time and didn’t have a home I highly doubt he would have a healthy appearance.
Some cat owners allow their pets to roam freely.

But what if he's just recently become lost? I haven't heard of many cat owners who let their cats roam in the middle of the night, usually they go in when it gets dark

There's supposed to be a thunderstorm later tonight, I nervous that he'll get too cold

We also have coyotes in the feild across the street from us who are active at night, and they've come right into the neighborhood before

We have coyotes in our streets too and yet people still let their cats out, even at night. And plenty of huge hawks as well.
I have seen one caught myself.
I don’t understand why they wonder when they go missing.
Perhaps you can set up some outdoor refuge and if the cat is there all night then maybe he is recently lost. It’s important to try to find his owners if at all possible. But you may find they believe in letting their pet wander at all hours.
Around here we have online places to post about loose pets, maybe they do near you?

I left the umbrella in the flower planter (which is up against a fence and seems to do a good job of keeping the water out). He has wandered off again, I'll go out when it starts raining and see if he's back

I checked one of the online lost pet listings and didn't see him, but there's more than one so I'll keep looking

I took him to the vet to scan for a chip, and we found his home! His name is bucky and he had been missing for three days. She said that he's an outdoor cat but sometimes he just runs off. He had gotten out of his collar

I'm going to miss him but I'm glad he's safe at home

Bucky might come back again!

Scientists (who apparently have a lot of spare time on their hands) studied what pet cats did when they were outside. In addition to mooching food wherever they can, it appears they are scouting the area for possible new homes...in case they decide to move.

A stray outdoor cat adopted my brother-in-law. For all practical purposes it became their pet cat. Then, months later, some neighbors driving by saw the cat there and knocked on the door to find out why their missing cat was there. (They only lived a few doors away!)

Awwww ! ! That's great news ! ! Sorry I didn't see your other posts from last night, but I'm really glad you took him for a chip scan. It's good to know that the chips work because I've always put them on my pets, but I'm never confident that enough people know about them to bother checking any found animals.

What a great success story ! !

Your idea about the umbrella is super cute too and made me saw "Awww!!" out loud!

Yay, Bucky!

We had a mama cat around here last summer and she was really affectionate, but appeared to be heavily pregnant and she wouldn't let us pick her up. We made some birthing zones for her but she finally disappeared after about a week of constant worry on our part. I don't know what happened to her or the kitties. We called her Tonka because she was so full!

I really hope he comes back to visit! His home is only a couple blocks away, so I'm optimistic. Maybe I can be his vacation home.

He seemed surprisingly resistant to going back into his owner's house, even though he's generally very laid back. Maybe he doesn't like the other cat that lives there or something

Here he is under his umbrella! I would have put it somewhere that didn't require him lying in dirt but he had already gotten cozy in there. He came back to his little nest multiple times the next day even though it wasn't raining. (Sorry if the image is huge, don't know much about formatting)

I hope Tonka and her kittens are somewhere safe and happy right now

What a sweet baby! I am so glad he is safe in his home, he was lucky to have come across you.
