I often need help with something and I usually want it taken care of quickly without delay, partly so I won't forget about it later. However, help is not always quick in coming, which means I'm forced to wait for it, so that it can be done on someone else's time. The problem with that is that I'm worried I will forget about what I needed help with in the first place. How can I be able to delay my gratification without forgetting what I needed help with? I tend to obsess over it, just so you know.

Either make a note of what you need help with that is still pending or become more self-sufficient...or both

What does it mean to be more self-sufficient? Are you saying I should do everything on my own without help?

The phrase " To become more self sufficient" means "to become more self sufficient".

To gradually become more able to do more stuff yourself.

Not necessarily "to instantly magically suddenly master everything yourself".

I don't understand. You obsess over it but you also forget?

1. Write it down, or better yet, type it into a calendar app with reminders so you know when help is coming to do what.

2. If it's within your budget, pay for help to come asap. There are Facebook groups with people seeking odd jobs as well as location based apps that you can hire people to do cleaning, gardening, moving, skilled trades etc - possibly even same day.

I obsess as a way to keep from forgetting when I can't get to it immediately, which some people in my family seem to find annoying.

So, get something to obsess instead of me? I'm also not really fond of reminders, especially if I forget something. If I forget and I get a reminder, not only will it come as an unpleasant surprise (of which I'm also not fond), but I will probably not remember what it is that I need to do. If it needs to be done in a timely manner, it may already be too late, especially if I have other, competing priorities.

There's a couple possibilities if help will arrive too late. Getting the task done in a timely manner was not very important or you were able to accomplish the task without the help in which case you didn't need to arange for the help to come in the 1st place. Don't agree to have help come if they will not come in time.

1. How can you forget what it was if you type yourself a reminder and a schedule the times it’s to remind you? :? iCal does this. Type your own event in the calendar ie “Renew car insurance,” on whatever date you’re going to go do it then set two reminders - one for a day or two before, one for 2 hours before. The notifications come up and you’re reminded of what and when.

2. Don’t procrastinate and just do stuff yourself now instead of waiting for someone else or delaying and doing it yourself later if you can’t manage making plans and sticking to them for yourself or when meeting with other people. If the task isn’t That important to get done then I guess you just won’t do it until it is.

i also have alot of memory issues so to help myself to remember to do tasks i tie certain activities together. like say i need to brush my teeth so i do that before i take a shower so those two activities are linked in my mind.

writing myself notes and using scheduling type apps can help too. my roomate has a calender that has what days i need to do certain things on it. that helps alot too.

i try to do tasks as soon as possible to reduce the chances of me forgetting them.

i do get needing help with stuff. unfortunatly in some situations one cant get help so working towards being able to do some things that need to be done oneself can be useful.

I'm exactly like this. I need help with something but when the help arrives and they ask what I need, my mind goes completely blank.
I've started writing notes on my phone when I think of things. The phone is good because I usually have it with me.
I don't always remember to do it, and my DSP often has to ask me if I have anything written down, but things are slightly better.

Good question. He did say he obsesses due to being forgetfull so I'd guess this is an OCD anxiety type of worrying which might be resistant to rational logic.
