No, toilets don't flush the other direction in Australia.

It is a common myth that toilets flush in the opposite direction in Australia. The only way this could be true is if they designed toilets differently there.

No.

They flush in the "opposite direction" up HERE on top of the globe.

But seriously ...my commode just flushed clockwise...and I live north of the Equator in the USA.

And yes there is a belief that toilets flush counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere.

So...ATTENTION ALL AUSSIES, KIWIES, and anyone else living in the Southern Hemisphere...which is it?

Does your toilet flush counterclockwise, or clockwise?

To paraphrase Marvin Gaye "can we get a witness?". :)

Come on folks!

I wanna put this myth to the test...empirically.

Some of the most vocal folks on this site are Aussies.

Where are you blokes?

Tell us all which way...the water goes whey you flush your toilet! :D

Small things like drains, toilets, and sinks drain in the way they are designed to drain by shape and water flow. Large things like storms spin in opposite directions.

But sinks and toilets etc are not designed to flow any particular lateral direction. Just straight down. But the water still takes on a spin while it goes down the drain. Which on top of the globe is clockwise. Due to the Coriolis effect.

I don't know. But I do know that Australians and New Zealanders don't use the term counterclockwise like we Americans do, so maybe that's throwing them off. They would say anticlockwise.

So, let's ask them again: When you flush, does the water spin clockwise of anticlockwise?

EDIT: Is Pepe gone for good? He was one of the most active Australians here. He'd probably have already responded by now.

I suppose that those two (Pepe, and Cyberdad) were the two most high profile WPers from Downunder.

With both of them gone we pretty much now have 'radio silence' from Austalia. Oh well.

Glad to know they flush down and not up.

I can't believe anyone could be so stupid as to believe that toilets flushed upwards in Australia.

UNLESS compasses pointing to magnetic North are pointing downwards to the Bottom of the globe, then they flush the opposite direction Down here on the bottom of the globe.. don't they? :chin:

Were talking about clockwise verses counterclockwise.
