Mind you I work at one of those companies where they insist we get what's called sensitivity training every 6-12 months repeatedly and pride themselves on being discrimination free. Well our boss made us watch a video of a tv show called Office. I wasn't familiar with the show, but someone said it had been a new tv show that got canceled after a few episodes.

Anyway in the show Office the main character is the most stereotypical pig boss you can imagine. The whole time he spews insults at every ethnicity, plus gays, women, fat people and nerds. One of the characters was also clearly Aspie. Might as well just insult everyone I guess huh! There are even several times where sex organs are mentioned. In one episode he even has a diversity meeting with the office staff in which he has them hurl racial insults at each other. Well I won't tell on my boss, but I can't believe he was so dang stupid as to have us watch that. If corporate finds out he will be canned! He better hope no one else in the group runs to HR complaining. I just can't believe he would not think twice about bringing something like that in. He is a bit of an airhead though! To me it was just an extremely crude show, but really it did violate so many of our company policies that its hilarious. Hmm I wonder if I will have a new boss tomorrow!

The only thing better than that was the anti-sexual harrassment presentation I and a group of women were forced to attend 2 yrs ago in which the CEO of the company slapped and put his hand on the knee of a female manager. And a very high up manager at that. And she was wearing a skirt...hence bare knee and he put his hand on her in front of us!

reminds me of the time i worked for the census bureau... we all had to sit through a racial sensitivity orientation... at the end, the guy asked if there were any questions... i raised my hand, and with a deadpan straight face, said- 'if you put an oriental through an orientation, do they get disoriented?'

The Office is a comedy show that has won loads of awards and been franchised in several countries - I guess it is just 'British humour'

The Office is a comedy. Did you watch the American version (with Steve Carrel)?

In the US version, they changed the actors, and some of the characters and the script, so it was very different from the UK original.

In the UK version there was 'political incorrectness' but it was very clear that the boss who perpetrated this was an idiot and that those around him did not agree with his behaviour.

yeah, why should we be PC, all it does is make us aware that some other people might not appreciate what we find funny! Besides, we never object or feel bad when someone makes a joke pointing out how clumsy and dork like WE are, I mean it doesn't hurt us when people roll their eyes and circle their finger at their temples at autistic folks, right?

And where does it state that a person has a right to not be offended? Free speech isnt there to protect speech only you approve of. I'm not endorsing or even condoning mocking others, but this s**t has gone too far. I mean, you really think anyone was geniunely hurt by Imus? I know the multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against him says otherwise, but still..

I just like to say im not a big tv watcher and I usly find most tv programming other than educational or exceptional dramas like law and order to be rather irritating and repulsive. But ever timed I ever seen the show office I loved it xD

This is not about whether non-PC shows should be allowed on tv. I suspect most of you are not working in the corporate world. In the kind of job I am in everything presented in this show is enough to get someone fired. Whether or not you find it enjoyable to make fun of people who are different that doesn't mean you can do that at work. If you do you get fired it's simple as that. I've seen supervisors fired for making what they thought was a joke. Who cares what is on tv. This is about working environments, not whether a show has the right to be on tv. If there's something offensive on tv you can simply change the channel. But to be forced to watch something offensive at work is entirely different.

And this wasn't a British show. This was entirely American actors though the show may have been British in origin or influence. But the humor was the nasty cruel kind only Americans can dish out. In contrast the British can be quite funny when they want to be.

It was suppose to have been a treat for us. Movie and pizza night to reward some of us for exceeding our goals and it was time away from our desks. Even the rewards given doesn't make sense... our boss is so goofy. Ok we were third place winners. So we got pizza, soda and 2 hours out of work to watch Office. Whereas first place got a $25 gift certificate which is nice. But get this 2nd place only gets sandwiches from Crystal Creek. lol I'd rather have pizza than a cold sandwich!

Ticker, that sucks! I dread the corporate world for things like Happy Hour and what you described. Next time, it might be good to have a list of excuses prepared so that you can go home early, rather than sit in your place of employment doing nothing but being a captive audience to crap that you'd never allow in your own home. At least Happy Hour affords the freedom to walk and ignore what you don't want to hear.

are you kidding me?

you don't think some young woman that is minding her own business wants to be called a "nappy headed whore' in the national media?? I can barely stand it when someone tells me I need a mint! I can't imagine the horror and bewilderment those women must have felt??
