None in my own car apart from when I reversed into someone badly parked in a pub car park when it was snowing (poor visibility). Had a few when I was weed spraying on a quad bike.

As driver or passenger?

Two standout for me:

- I was driving my bride to the hospital for some scheduled surgery. Traffic was heavy. The car in front of me stopped so I stopped. The car behind me was not paying attention and rear-ended me, pushing me into the car in front of me. Car #4 was apparently surprised when Car #3 abruptly stopped without their brake lights coming on so Car #4 rear-ended Car #3, causing it to rear-end me again, causing me to rear-end Car #1, again. We were in the road shoulder for some time and I should've turned my flashers off before they drained the battery too much. Fortunately Car #1 gave my bride a ride to the hospital (I managed to get there in a rental before they started cutting).

- Last month, I was working my way through some heavy traffic when a car side-swiped me. The first impact was with my right rear fender; left, right, and forward looked clear so my first reaction was to think a pothole had opened up under my car. But then they continued swiping their way up the rest of the right side of my car, knocking the side-view mirror off...spectacularly. It turned out the driver who hit me was 20 years old and she'd just gotten her car the day before! I don't know how she's been getting on. Given the damage to my car and the age of my car, my insurance company declared it a total write-off. The worst part of that is that same make and model are no longer available so now I have to figure out what kind of car to buy now.

As a driver, I have only scraped a park car at low speeds.

As a passenger, I have been in many, the worst being a fatal accident.

As a witness - too numerous to mention.

10 years ago I was hit by an HGV on the M25. I was driving an old Volvo estate fortunately. The lorry hit me from behind and reduced the length of my car by a foot - I had to scrap it but their insurance paid up for this. Oddly the actual incident didnt affect me too much. I think that this was because I was hyperfocused on a meeting that I was on my way to and in those days for a number of reasons had a greater degree of resilience.

Last year a similar thing happened but on a rural road here in Cornwall. I was hit from the rear by a large 4x4 vehicle whilst driving a compact VW hatchback. The rear of the car up to the front seats was completely crushed and destroyed. Fortunately I suffered no physical injury - something that seemed amazing to onlookers and the emergency services. Psychologically I struggled immediately and for a number of weeks following this. It took me a long time to process and accept what had happened and I feeling of vulnerability generalised into other aspects of my life. I remain nervous when driving especially if people are tailgating me.

The 'I am Autistic' card that I carry with emergency contact details and explanation of my sensory processing issues and communication differences was invaluable when interacting with the emergency services.

They don't make em like they used too, I am in two minds about modern crumple zones.

You were very lucky to come out unscatched from these incidents.

I am glad you were okay, in any case.

Where did you get an "I am autistic" card?

What kind of positive and negative things happened as a result of the card?

Thank you very much
