It's Halloween and I just feel like asking one of those interesting questions to do with the supernatural. I'm also asking this question because I remember a number of times I saw that film made by Disney about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow in Ichabod Crane is being chased by the Headless Horseman until he crosses a bridge and the Horseman doesn't follow him across and instead throws a fiery pumpkin at him, although according to the short story by Washington Irving, the horseman throws his severed head at Crane before being ''spirited away''. I know vampires can't cross running water and I think demons can't either but I'm not sure though about ghosts. I'm not quite sure why some supernatural and mythical beings can't cross anywhere where there is running water.

My best guess would be because, as Indigenous peoples say: "Water is Life." Perhaps the life force is simply too strong in water and it repels the dead ? Or perhaps whoever made these stories up needed to include Some sort of "safety element," mythology so that when they told tales they didn't completely freak out the listeners as they gave them a safety tip of where they could go and be to be safe from the ghosties.. could just be clever storytelling. However, there could also be some truth to it, as there is with many things spiritual/mythical/religious.. it could simply be that humans have discovered that a property of water (which has MANY very strange properties that can be measured and observed by science!) is that ghosts/demons/entities etc can't cross it if it's flowing.. I dunno - first I've heard of it in this thread, but when I ever get around to doing DMT maybe the entities will tell me. :P

I remember the alien threat in the movie Signs (2002) was defeated by water.

Do you mean actually wade through running water?

Or you asking if they can cross bridges over water or not?

Can't they just float over it?

I don’t think they can, and here is my reasoning. Ghosts supposedly give off a faint Electro Magnetic Field, which is what you see when ghost hunters go around with a little gadget that measures those fields. Water, especially running water affects electro magnetic fields. So trying to cross water would mess with their ghostly energy, which would dissuade them from trying to cross.

Lolol! All that looks like to me is an escape of compressed gas escaping as the container moves.

If you ask Robert Bruce he'd say no. Mileage of course varies on whether that's an opinion you'd take stock in.

There are no ghosts.  Ergo, the question is irrelevant and the premise is moot.

Every mythological creature needs an Achilles heal.
Or else they would be terrifying enough to not be interesting.
Pretending that they are real, is there any chance the density of the ghosts could cause an issue. Too heavy to float, and no arms or legs to swim

Well, in the Christian Bible, when Jesus walked across the water, his disciples thought it was a ghost at first. So there's that.

apparently the brazilian folklore creature, the Saci, loses his powers if he crosses a water stream. it seems to be a widespread belief that water is bad for supernatural creatures
