I used to like looking through phonebooks at all the surnames.

colleagues who originally came from Chile,Ukraine and Italy.

I used to call people by their last names and liked to be called by my last name. It felt unnaturally to use first names.

Rrguy,

I like to do this too! Greek names are my interest. My interest in the Olympics probably sparked my interest in such things. I like studying names from around the word, including names given to cats, such as Siamese cat names. (The name of my Siamese boy, Prince, is "cho fa" in Thai.)

I am of German and Italian descent.

Okay here is mine: "Losinger"

Obsess for a bit, and let me know what you conclude.

I think that my ancestor who shares that name move to Pennsylvania from Alsace or Lorraine in Eastern France (the part that was traded back and forth between France and Germany for many years, depending on who won the last war) in 1802.

There is an engineering company in Switzerland that is also named Losinger. It must have been founded by a very distant relative.

That's one nice obsession. But, I'm not impartial since I have the same thing. I found out all of my friends, family and other people origins and history. My favourite surnames are celtic and scandinavian.

I'm interested in people's dates of birth instead of it :D

I happen to ask people to show me their students books, pretending I want to see their photos while in fact the thing I check is a date of birth :D

Pandabear, as an expert, I conclude that your name is English and means "cough drop".

I used to be obsessed with foreign-sounding names, especially ones where the first name and the last name together had a nice ring to it.
