Since young, I have had an interest in psychology and have learnt a lot by reading true life(or as true to life as one can get from books) stories of serial killers, abused kids, hostages, disasters etc etc.

For example, currently I am looking at the Natasha Kampusch story...the woman locked in a cellar for 8 years and who developed a strange relationship with her captor.

Things like this have always fascinated me. The same with grand scale disasters like Titanic and Zeebrugge.

I wonder if it is because things like this perhaps manage to reach me whereas anything close to my real life does not?

I cannot really explain what I am trying to explain but I have always been able to feel more for these things than anything closer to home...

I seem to project more empathy on things further away than those closer at home. Except my kids of course.

Personally I think the outcome of an abused child is quite random. Read the book: A Child Called "It" and you will know what I mean. In conclusion I think that they will grow up to be either an overly "good" person or a demented monster in the end. Personally I cant call myself either of those things, so I guess it depends on the situations.
This is what Ive learned from my experiences: How NOT to treat your kids. So I turned out to be the good guy in the end, but I still have an attraction to mischief every once in a while  So I didnt really turn out to be "bad" either.

The effects of childhood abuse seem to be so diverse. I suppose it depends on the child's underlying personality and other factors, but some seem to cope remarkably well and use the experience for positive things...some seem to just sink into a plethora of psychiatric conditions as a result, and others still end up involved in criminal activities. Some further have a combination of the latter two things.

Its strange, because kids in "perfect" or should I say, functional families can grow up to be serial killers as well. Personally I think it depends more on the nature of the person than the experiences they go through. Maybe even heretics have something to do with it. I was watching a Nip/Tuck episode and it covered that subject a little bit.

Its really interesting. When I was younger I was obsessed with learning (kind of like a hobby), and covered this subject quite a bit. I pretty much gave up since then but maybe one of these days Ill feel more up to it :D That would be cool I think.

I was a psych major in school and thought if I learned to help myself not be so "crazy",I might be able to help others. The more I learned about the so called science of psychology, the crazier I thought it was.The more I learned about human history and what falls under "normal",the crazier I thought they were.I decided it was immoral to try and get planes flying out of formation to conform to a formation I felt was "off course".Crazy seems like a normal reaction to an insane world.

Now I am more interested in trying to understand the "insanity" that passes as "normal"...llike driving a Hummer and saying you care about your kids future????Or supporting a war that puts your country in debt while destroying another countrys infrastructure and saying you want to win "hearts and minds".Or going on TV and telling people that if you dont vote for me "you will be attacked" (ie,terrifying them to vote for you)while claiming to fight terrorism(an act of scaring people to get them to do what you want)?????

Yes, studying human psychology has helped me fill in the (large) gaps in my social understanding.

"The effects of childhood abuse seem to be so diverse." The forms of child abuse are very diverse as well.
Heres one frightening example of what happened to a girl who is around the same age as I:

These events occurred around 1970, I was 12 years old, the girl was 13.

Ah yes, I know that case well. There was a film made based on it. I read quite a lot about it.
