What's a vacation you've been on that you remember fondly? Either as a kid or as an adult.

When I was a kid we used to go to the beach in Italy on the island of Sardinia, which is kind of remote, for Italy, and has pristine beaches, unlike some other parts of Italy where the seawater is polluted. We could walk from the place where we were staying down to the beach along a dirt path, and we had a Zodiac that we used to go to even more tucked away beaches. It's very dry and rocky there.

Do you like travel, sightseeing, nature?

One of my favorite vacations was going to Maine with my friend’s family when I was 12. We climbed Mount Katahdin where I encountered Anastasia the moose. The experience was great in every way. We also went to Acadia National Park, kayaked in the ocean, and went whale watching where we got to see a female humpback whale with her baby. The weather was fantastic the entire time which made for fantastic views.

The fresh lobster was memorable, too. The best I ever had.

I've always been happiest travelling solo with no fixed itinerary or destination.
My first world trip I flew into London and flew out of Italy 3 months later, hitchhiking to visit as many relatives as I could find. My last holiday 7 years ago I flew to Bangkok and followed the rocket festivals around the country.
(Several ethnicities launch rockets to request the gods for the start of monsoon. We're not talking Bottlerockets here... Imagine a 4 metre steel pipe rammed with gunpowder and attached to an 8 metre bamboo pole. In 2017 the Thai government banned the use of more than a ton of gunpowder per rocket. During rocket season there are at least 17 no fly zones because these monsters reach jetliner cruising altitudes. Even better are the girandolas (hoop stabilised tourbillons. I'll see if I can find a video) these are also large steel pipes laid horizontally forming the diameter of a giant bamboo ring, each pipe has 4 angled nozzles making them spin as they lift. They are sat on a giant free spinning cross, the launch pad is evacuated and some crazy bugger runs out with a 6 foot pole with a burning rag on the end, who lights each nozzle and starts it spinning. From behind earthworks the crew are deafened by a slow, but getting faster "woosh woosh" until it gracefully lifts itself in the air. A commentator on the PA relays the judges scoring for elegance of smoke trail, duration of flight and altitude. If the constructors have done their jobs properly they will descend on a parachute, but I witnessed several chute failures and the pipe buries itself with almighty "thwack" in the rice paddies (hopefully))

And here is the crew who let me help transport and launch one.Image

Those rockets sound really amazing but I would be terrified and would be too scared to be anywhere near them. :) Cool that you got to participate.

I do like travel, sightseeing, and nature and plan to do some more of that when I retire.

Recently, I went up to Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, with my brother to bury my mother's ashes. There is nothing much up in Martinsburg other than wide open plains, farmland, well-constructed brick houses, and hints and traces of the Amish and Mennonite communities that lurk there and are occasionally visible. It is such a good and wholesome small town. I enjoyed the trip immensely, because we went bowling and went out to restaurants and such, and it was great fun to do all of these (for me) unusual things. It is clear why my mother moved up there long ago.

Back before my car quit working, I would randomly take off to the woods and do some primitive camping, hiking, and so on with the dog. It was amazing. I miss being able to do that. I live in Michigan, and we have no shortages of national forests you can go explore. It's relaxing to me and it's beautiful and calm out there, quiet. So good. I like vacations like that.

In my mid teens my family went to Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD one year and Southern California the next. I enjoyed both of these trips thoroughly. The former especially because I'm a history nerd and getting to see historical landmarks in addition to the museums in DC was so awesome!! (this was long before I lived in the Northeast) The Southern California trip was neat just because the area is so different from what I was used to - arid mountains, tall palm trees, beaches! It's very pretty.

As an adult my favorite trips have been the one to Colorado a couple of years ago with a friend and her family (I got to stay out in the mountains) as well as my initial visit to New England (not really a vacation persay, as it was to scope it out but I still got to have lots of fun), and then my trip to Northern New England a couple of months ago (got to see a little bit of Vermont, a lot of New Hampshire and Maine!). It's so neat to be close to so many neat places now!

The best vacation I've been on was two years ago when my family went to Colorado. We were in a very nice little town away from most of the tourism, but there were lots of good hikes to go on. We saw a lot of cool wildlife including an encounter with a mother and baby moose that in retrospect was not a great idea. And now I can say I've touched snow in July.

I've avoided mentioning that my dad had covid during this trip and because of that the whole trip really shouldn't have happened. Oh well. We still had fun.

A visit to my mom's hometown. 2 weeks ago.

It's the first time I actually found out what vacations supposed to feel like.
If it weren't for the time constraints, I would've stayed longer.

The breakthroughs and revelations are bonuses. The crashing afternath and contrasts is nasty however.

But ultimately, it was a family emergency.
If it weren't for one of my aunt owning a vehicle, there won't be any sightseeing.
