Hi everyone! Recently, while browsing Rednotes, I noticed many discussions about the differences in life experiences across various cultural backgrounds, especially between Chinese and American lifestyles—topics. Since I come from a non-Western background, I'd love to learn more about these differences by talking with you directly. So, if any American friends are willing, could you please share your real-life experiences?

Working hours wrote:
Most people in the United States have to work two or three jobs, and their total working hours span from 4 to 21. In cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, the morning rush hour is after 5 in the morning.

Expensive vegetables wrote:
A woman on TikTok said that paying for groceries in full is a luxury for ordinary people. After arranging rigid expenditures and daily necessities, lower middle class Americans need to save coupons to buy and stock up vegetables. Only the middle class has the financial ability to buy vegetables at will, and "vegetarianism" has become a way for the wealthy petty bourgeoisie to show their lifestyle.

Hungry wrote:
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2023, 18 million (13.5%) of the 130 million American households will have difficulty in obtaining adequate food, and 6.8 million (5%) will be in a state of chronic hunger.
Netanyahu pointed out in an interview last year that 20,000 people die from malnutrition in the United States each year.

Lunch debt and neglect wrote:
17% of American teenagers cannot get enough food.

The National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program in the United States charge $1.80 per person for breakfast and $3 for lunch. Although there is a 70% to 90% discount, one-third of students still have difficulty paying. In 2016, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a document requiring schools to notify parents that long-term arrears in meal fees will be reported to the relevant departments as "neglects" (a threat), resulting in the existence of "lunch shaming".
Free measures in some states wrote:
To solve the above problems, nine states including California, Minnesota, Vermont, and Illinois have launched permanent free breakfast and lunch since 2023.

Blood selling wrote:
A considerable proportion of college students and the middle class supplement their family income through paid blood donation, twice a week is common, and blood donation-related rules encourage large-scale and frequent blood donations.

Anecdote wrote:
Crying while seeking medical treatment, you have to pay for mental damages.

Use a clothes hanger to perform abortions by yourself.

Child marriage and childbirth are legal.

Soldiers pay for accommodation, uniforms, and weapons.

Having to go back to work after taking three days off after giving birth because part-time jobs don't offer maternity leave.

Using painkillers, marijuana to tolerate physical and mental pain

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! I'm not asking these questions to judge which way is better or worse—I’m simply very interested in how different cultures operate and eager to learn more. If any of my questions make you uncomfortable, please let me know, and I'll adjust them right away!

Access to abortion varies state to state, in states where it's illegal one very well may be in the position you described.
