Reach out to whatever legal aid is available in your area immediately. I'm not sure where you are, but in the US, you don't have a right to an attorney until arraignment, which means that anything that could be done to lessen the likelihood of being charged won't be done by a public defender. It's stupid, but that's how it works.
If you haven't yet been charged, there's probably stuff that can still be done to lessen the likelihood of actually being charged or the actual charges if they do opt to file them anyways.
IANAL, so I have absolutely no idea what you'd actually do about any of that, but there are often times legal aid nonprofits that can help out since you can't afford an attorney. And, unfortunately, not having an attorney can be far more expensive in the long term than finding the money to get one.
