My daughter loves Japan and anything Japanese.
She has an Uncle (on her mother's side) who studied Japanese anthropology (or something like that), lived in Japan a few different times on a Fulbright scholarship and whatever else, and now teaches at NYU.
I'm not sure if that's where the fascination began.
Anyway, she loves anime, manga, and the language. She started teaching herself Katakana, Hiragana, and Kanji with books I bought her and her Uncle sent her.
This was probably back when she was around 11y.o.
I wound up signing us up for a Japanese language class at a local college... I can't remember much, but she still like to cipher Japanese whenever she sees it.
Just about a week ago I was in a local store called "All Under Heaven", which has some really neat import stuff. Not cheap toys and such, but really nice items and books.
I wound up getting her a Totoro handbag, a plastic bento box for her lunch, and some stickers.
She LOVES this kinda stuff, and I have fun finding it for her!
I really want her to go to Japan someday.
