I am very liberal.

I am stuck right in the middle. I am a christian, but am on the fence about homosexual topics. I dont like too many gun regulations, but am not for tax breaks for large corporations.. At the same time, many corporations were small and struggling when they began... I think everyone should have a chance. I dont like walmart, so i believe in power of the consumer. I like less govt involvement when it comes to personal freedoms and amendment rights and i am for the legalization of marijuana. Yes, i think the first amendment rights need more protection. I personally dont want the govt to treat our nation of people like morons that must be controlled in regard to the lowest common denominator. Oh, yeah. and i think each citizen should take some personal responsibility for their actions and stop all the frivolous lawsuits. At the same time i am for health care regulation. I guess i am neither.

What happened to "Unsure"? I have honestly never really thought much about whether I was conservative or liberal for "social".

I felt that everybody would have their own definition of those two words. In reality, there probably is no textbook conservative or textbook liberal.

Maybe it would help if you defined "socially liberal" and "socially conservative" and listed the characteristics of each, or at least gave some examples.

I would say i am borderline conservative extremist. NO gun control NO abortion drop the "tax and spend" philosophy and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

i'm anarchist, scratch away a liberal you often find a fascist underneath.
I find the philosophy underpinning the anarchist/pacifist catholic worker, a great blueprint for right living and has a profound love for the poor marginalized.

I am defining liberal and conservative in terms of social issues that aren't necessarily of a political or religious nature (because not all Christians think this, not all Democrats think that, etc.).

Examples would be issues regarding the media, GLBT issues, whether or not marijuana should be legalized, etc.

Stances that would be considered "conservative" would be:

Media: "too much filth", or "Hollywood is leading our children down a sewer", etc.

GLBT: Marriages should only be between one man and one woman; job benefits should not be extended to unmarried couples (whether straight or GLBT)

Marijuana: Should not be legalized because it could fall into the wrong hands.

"Liberal" stances would include:

Media: No problem with the content of TV, movies, music, etc.; one has a choice not to view or listen to certain things if he/she feels that something is offensive.

GLBT: Same-sex marriages should be allowed; job benefits should be universal, regardless of relationship status.

Marijuana: Should be legalized.

There are many other issues that I may or may not have mentioned, but I am not talking about anything political (like foreign policy, the economy, etc).

I think fascists come from all points on the political spectrum.
How do you define fascist?

It seems that every person here has responded to the political aspects of the conservative/liberal question as opposed to the social aspects that Tim asked about. That may be due in part to a lack of definition socially conservative/liberal.

Personally, I'm socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but that's still a political answer.

What are the non-political characteristics of the social liberal and the social conservative? Tim?

Marijuana, GLBT, the Media, these are also political issues.

I'm socially liberal, (but fiscally conservative.)

My stances:

Media: People have a choice whether or not to view certain programming.

GLBT: I don't have a problem with same-sex marriage, and I feel that job benefits should be allowed without regard to relationship status.

Marijuana: If it has been thoroughly proven to reap positive medical benefits, then it should be legalized.

Abortion: Pro-choice

In case anyone was curious, in terms of politics, I have lately been veering toward Libertarianism.

Those issues *can* be political, but not always. Social issues frequently step outside political and religious bounds.

Maybe I meant to ask "Without regard to politics or religion, what is everyone's views on these topics?"
