I'm really getting tired of all these news articles talking about the struggling dollar and how its value is falling to new lows against the Euro, its less than the Canadian dollar.

But what really irks me is nowhere have I seen any of the authors of said articles use a little common sense. Seriously do they think the dollar could be as strong as it was last year given the large rises in minimum wage? That raised the cost of many of our products, thereby making the dollars purchase power weaker. Substitute teaching used to be a fairly decent way for me to earn a living but given the price increases that occurred this past year its really no more beneficial than being a fastfood worker. Actually less beneficial as most fast food places will give health insurance and other benefits to full time managers, benefits that subs don't get

These things have a way of cycling around. Back in the 90s, the US federal government ran budget surpluses for a short time. Then, the dollar was quite high, and travel abroad was favorable.

Since then, the federal government has decided to run huge budget deficits, similar to the 1980s. So, the dollar is falling and falling.

Probably after a change in political parties, the dollar will come back. But, for the near future, I think that it will fall further.

At least I can benefit from that. I have a hundred or so dollars in Canadian that I never bothered to exhange back because I just wanted out of the airport (I had gotten stuck over night on my way home, was assigned to another flight where I wasn't allowed the plane because it was too heavy, and then got to do the long wait all over again, etc.... and all because the first plane was having some serious mechanical problems)

I may be mistaken on this, but don't think so. Prior to the Bush administration the dollar was kept high. He reversed it. The dollar is actually a controlled commodity, sure it has sway in it. But they do set it's rate, they do it so things look good or bad. You can make the deficit look better or worse doing this little trick. Look at the China complaint, they won't set a better rate, now you can't do that if you don't control it now can you. It's Bush up to his BS people. It's to bad this didn't get put in the other section, there are some really sharp people on the subject of economics here, not exactly my forte.

The US Dollar has been falling in value for a number of reasons:

1) GWB and his motley crew are engaged in a war without end which is costing billions of dollars.

2) The home loans crisis has hit hard and it's just possible that one or more banks might go bust.

3) Nothing is made in the USA anymore, goods are manufactured in China and then imported.

4) The reputation of the USA is at its lowest point for years.

Finally I should point out one thing. I'm not your average left-wing European Socialist on an anti-USA rant, I'm American and until the last election I was a registered Republican.
