I confess, I've always gotten confused over this distinction myself. Oh, wait; this is not the "I confess..." thread... Hmmm... Well, what I said still holds. "Jewish" has always been a rather ambiguous term to me. Is "Jewish" a race, or a religion? Am I "Christian" by blood since my mum was? Is "Jewish" by blood the same as "Hebrew"? My mind boggles...

"Jewish" can be both, or either, race, as in a proven hiereditary link to the Israeli tribe of Judah, or religion as in both the above and personal or anchesteral line of conversion.

Hebrew would encompass all the 12 tribes of Israel of which Judah or the Jews is only one and is the only known surviving one, allthough some Jews would claim they are from the priestly tribe of Levi.

The 10 Northern Tribes of Israel where rejected by God due to thier unrepentant apostacy, leaving only the tribe of Judah, preistly Levites and I think some from the tribe of Benjamin.

Now some in the West like to think the Northern 10 or "Lost tribes of Israel" headed West and became the Western civilizations, they consider the better standard of life we have in the West to be an evidence of the continuing blessing of God, this is why you get a lot of non-Jewish Zionists, all hoping to become Gods chosen people again when the Lost Tribes are regathered back to Palestine.

So, if the above is indeed true, maybe we are all Hebrews so Happy Rosh HaShana to you all!

Jews differ from Christianity in that Jewish is both a religion and a ethnicity. Technically anyone who's mother is Jewish is a Jew whether they practice the religion or not. Those Jews can convert to Catholicism, but that doesn't erase their Jewishness.

Half Jews are people whose fathers are Jewish. Technically they are Jewish by blood because they carry Jew DNA, but "real Jews" often do not accept them even if they go through conversion to become a "real Jew". But among the Kararites a person must have a Jewish father to be a Jew. Hence one reason Jews are always disagreeing among themselves fighting over who belongs and who doesn't.

Also anyone of any race can be Jewish if they go through conversion. There are Jews in just about every country.

There are actually a lot of Jews on this board as we have conversed before. However, most of them I think don't practice the religion nor do they recognize the holidays. In certain parts of the world there are however many Jews who celebrate the holidays but do not really practice the religion. Secular Judaism that is called.

Is everyone confused now?

It depends what you mean by ethnicity. The Jewish race idea has been disproved by genetic studies. There is no common origin of Ethiopian Jews and those for central Europe for example. But that doesn't matter too much I suppose. You need something to counter the far right nationalist Zionists who go out and settle in Palestinian land against a UN mandate.

Actually it is an ethnicity. In the old days Jews always married other Jews so it because a very select and small gene pool. Also there are a number of serious Jewish genetic disorders so indeed it seems we are a distinct group of people.

Please don't start the whole Zionist debate thing. This thread was meant as a Happy Holidays thread to OTHER JEWS. Not a place for Gentiles to debate Zionists. If you are Goy and want to argue some point, please start a new post on that.

I think tribal religion covers the issues better than ethnicity. Anyway, may you all be written for a kick-ass year.
