Now... I know that when I used other sites that had no Emoticons... and... I saw all these regulars making loads of cool smileys... meanwhile I was banging my fist on my desk 'or snooker table with a lid on' shouting "WHAT ARE THESE SMILEYS!?" and I felt my consience going :shameonyou: at me... so I eventually I learnt how to get smiley's in messages... I think there should be an internet guide to using smileys so...Or even an educational guide to be used in school ICT lessons teaching people how to use smileys. I think they should make one... anybody happy to help?... or say how crazy and mad my idea is

I spent ages trying to figure out what the smileys on here represented until I found that if you put the cursor on them then they are labelled but what is Razz ??? :P

I know what you mean, haha. I was thinking it's kind of ironic, Aspies using emoticons...

Oh see, I just realized I like to  in messages, but I don't even know when it's appropriate to wink. I mean, does anybody actually wink in real life??

Yes - they do!

Seriously, I still need to hold the cursor over most of the emoticons to know what they mean - do NT's need to do this or is it obvious to them?

What are ITC lessons?

I am somewhat conflicted about emoticons. I don't like using them because I'm not very expressive irl, so it seems kind of fake for me to use them. But I've learned the hard way that printed words tend to come across more forcefully than intended and therefore are often misinterpreted. So sometimes I use emoticons in order to help get my intentions across. So people don't think I'm being hostile when I'm really being silly. I hope it actually helps!

yes this is why I use them after being confused that people didn't read my emails with full knowledge of how I felt when writing them.

Yes, this happened to me the other day. I messaged a friend online and made a joke and he took it the wrong way. Then I had to explain, and now all is well. But for a while I really freaked out and thought the person hated me. But I couldn't think of how else to word my offending message, so yeah, emoticons would have helped with that...
